John M. Bennett - USA

Em 1985 participou da exposição internacional The Adventures of Bob, The Dog of Knowledge, realizada nas Bob Dog Galleries em San Francisco. Em 1985 a revista The Gamut publicou John Bennett?s Poetry of Beauty and Disgust, estudo de Leonard Trawick dedicado à sua poesia.

English

John M. Bennett, born on October 12, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois, United States, is a poet, visual poet, mail artist, performer, sound artist, editor, researcher, archivist and producer of experimental publications. Based for decades in Columbus, Ohio, he became an important figure in American experimental poetry and international Mail Art networks beginning in the 1970s. His work encompasses verbal poetry, visual poetry, sound poetry, experimental calligraphy, drawing, collage, rubber stamps, performance, sound recording, film, video, correspondence and artists publications. The Ohio State University documentation records that his work became increasingly known during the 1970s and developed across text, visual poetry, graphics, sound and performance poetry, Mail Art, film and media, often through collaborations with writers and artists around the world.Bennett received an academic education closely connected with Spanish language and Latin American literatures. He studied English and Spanish at Washington University in St. Louis and completed a master's degree in 1966. He subsequently earned a PhD in Latin American Literature from the University of California, Los Angeles, UCLA, in 1970. From 1969 to 1976 he served as Assistant Professor of Spanish at The Ohio State University. These educational and professional details are documented by the Smithsonian Institution.A biographical account associated with his own documentation adds that Bennett graduated cum laude from Washington University in 1964 with a double major in Spanish and English, received an MA in Spanish language and literatures in 1966 and also completed a Certificate of Competence in Latin American Studies. His training as a scholar of Latin American literature had a lasting effect on his poetry, particularly through his recurring use of Spanish, his interest in Mesoamerican cultures and his engagement with Hispanic and Latin American literary traditions. His academic work in Latin American and Spanish literature developed alongside an increasingly experimental artistic practice. Bennett progressively moved beyond the conventional concept of the poem as a linear written text and investigated language as visual, phonetic, bodily and material substance. Letters, syllables, invented words, orthographic distortions, textual fragments, superimpositions, drawings, marks, handwriting and rubber stamps became recurring components of his practice.Bennett frequently disrupts and reconstructs language. His poetry can move among English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and references to Mesoamerican languages. This multilingual dimension has been recognized in critical writing about his work and is particularly evident in books and poems where linguistic boundaries are deliberately unstable. Ivan Argüelles, introducing Select Poems, emphasizes Bennett's polyglot practice and situates it in relation both to Spanish literary traditions and to twentieth century avant garde transformation. In 1974 Bennett founded the experimental small press Luna Bisonte Prods in Columbus, also known during parts of its history as Luna Bisonte Productions. It developed into a platform for experimental poetry, visual poetry, audio work, books, chapbooks and artists publications by an international community of writers and artists. Authors and artists published by Luna Bisonte Prods include Ivan Argüelles, Sheila E. Murphy, Jim Leftwich, Carlos M. Luis, Scott Helmes, Jake Berry, Al Ackerman, Bob Heman, Richard Kostelanetz, Olchar E. Lindsann, Mark Young and Peter Ganick, among many others. In 1975 Bennett initiated another of his defining projects, Lost and Found Times, which he edited and published until 2005. For thirty years the journal functioned as a meeting point for experimental poetry, visual poetry, Mail Art, textual collage, graphic language and independent publishing. The Smithsonian Institution confirms Bennett's activity as editor and publisher of the journal throughout this period.Lost and Found Times also operated as a physical node within an international network. A 1979 issue preserved by the Lomholt Mail Art Archive was produced in Columbus by Luna Bisonte Prods and contains contributions and references involving artists and writers from several countries, including Al Ackerman, Rodolfo Alonso, Arturo Carrera, Robin Crozier, Keith Rahmmings and Armando Zárate. The journal demonstrates how Bennett used publishing and distribution not simply to circulate his own work but to connect geographically dispersed experimental practices.Bennett became deeply involved in Mail Art during the 1970s, exchanging poems, postcards, pamphlets, collages, publications and other postal objects with artists in different countries. The postal system became a site for creation, distribution and collaboration and connected his poetry with the decentralized principles of the international correspondence art network. An especially important record of Bennett's relationship with Brazil dates from 1977. The Ohio State University preserves documentation of Multipostais number 1, a Brazilian Mail Art and visual poetry project consisting of eighteen postcards and images. Bennett contributed the graphic postcard Intestinos Fuera. His participation demonstrates an early connection with Latin American networks of visual poetry and postal art.In 1978 he participated in the international exhibition Black on White in Segovia, Spain, held during October and November. The catalogue preserved at The Ohio State University contains his visual poem Fork, documenting his European circulation through Mail Art and visual poetry exhibitions during the 1970s.In 1980 Bennett presented Big Notes, an exhibition devoted exclusively to his visual poetry at the Contemporary Media Study Center in Dayton, Ohio, from February 3 to March 1. Directed by Jud Yalkut, the center presented the exhibition with support from the Ohio Arts Council. Opening activities included a poetry reading and film presentation. Surviving documentation includes posters, handwritten poems and a brochure containing Bennett's biography and bibliography. That same year Bennett participated in Metronom Exposicio de Tramesa Postal in Barcelona, held from October through December 1980. Documentation records Bennett as a participant and reproduces material submitted by him. He also participated in the Mail Art Show at the College of New Rochelle in New York from June 29 through August 22 and in the Mostra de Arte Postal in Franca, São Paulo, Brazil. The Franca exhibition is especially significant within Bennett's Brazilian history. It demonstrates that his relationship with Brazilian experimental art was not limited to Multipostais but continued through networks in which visual poetry, experimental writing, Mail Art, independent publications and Latin American artists circulated together. In 1981 Bennett participated in L?art Postal Dedans Dehors, a Mail Art exhibition in Paris organized by Daniel Daligand and collaborators. The documentation preserved by The Ohio State University identifies Bennett among the participating artists. In 1983 his work was included in Multimedia UFRN in Brazil, held from May 16 through May 28. The Ohio State University documentation characterizes it as an exhibition involving Mail Art, poetry, rubber stamps and other media and explicitly records that Bennett had work in the exhibition. Its location at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte is particularly significant because Natal was one of the foundational cities of the Brazilian Process Poem Movement. This proximity does not establish Bennett as a historical member of the Process Poem Movement. No documentation located in the consulted sources identifies him as a participant in the Brazilian movement founded in 1967. The appropriate connection is through later networks of visual poetry and Mail Art. Bennett circulated in Brazilian and Latin American projects in which artists associated with Process Poem also participated, particularly during the international expansion of correspondence art in the 1970s and 1980s.This historical connection is reinforced by the international character of Bennett's networks. His archival documentation includes material associated with Paulo Bruscky, Julien Blaine, Miroljub Todorovi?, Vittore Baroni, Jürgen Olbrich, Robin Crozier, Rod Summers, Bern Porter, Ryosuke Cohen and numerous other participants in visual poetry, sound poetry and Mail Art. The Ohio State University records these relationships through publications, catalogues, correspondence and exhibition documentation. From the late 1970s onward Bennett collaborated repeatedly with British sound poet and performer Rod Summers, a central figure associated with VEC, Visual and Experimental Concrete. Among the preserved examples is a visual concrete poem created by Bennett and Summers in 1983.Collaboration constitutes another central dimension of Bennett's practice. He has produced books, poems, performances and recordings with numerous writers, visual poets and musicians, including C. Mehrl Bennett, Ivan Argüelles, Jim Leftwich, Scott Helmes, Tom Cassidy, Martín Gubbins, F. A. Nettelbeck, Richard Kostelanetz, Jake Berry, Ben Bennett, Bob Marsh and Jack Wright. His practice frequently replaces fixed individual authorship with intervention, exchange, response and mutual transformation. His relationship with C. Mehrl Bennett has particular artistic and biographical importance. They met through Mail Art correspondence, a relationship later documented in John McClintock's 1982 film Mail Art Romance. Their story is an especially clear example of the social dimension of postal art, where artistic circulation, collaboration and personal relationships intersect.Bennett has also developed an extensive practice in sound poetry and experimental music. Voice functions as a material extension of writing, with poems undergoing phonetic transformation during performance. A later example is Ohio Grimes and Misted Meanies, released in 2011 with Bennett performing words, voice and objects, Ben Bennett using invented devices, Bob Marsh on guitar and Jack Wright on saxophones. His international participation in Mail Art exhibitions remained active throughout the 1980s. In 1985 Bennett participated in The Adventures of Bob, The Dog of Knowledge at the Bob Dog Galleries in San Francisco. The same year he participated in 125 Mail Artists? Fears in Los Angeles, organized by Jeff Mullican, and contributed to the first issue of Brain Cell coordinated by Ryosuke Cohen, a project that subsequently became one of the longest running activities within international Mail Art.Critical attention to Bennett was already substantial during this period. In 1985 The Gamut published Leonard Trawick's study John Bennett?s Poetry of Beauty and Disgust, examining Bennett's verbal and visual work and reproducing poems, photographs, collaborative calligraphic work and rubber stamp labels.Alongside writing, publishing and performance, Bennett developed an important professional role as archivist and curator. Beginning in 1976 he worked in The Ohio State University Libraries, initially in relation to Latin American studies and later in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Library. Within that institutional environment he established the Avant Writing Collection, devoted to preserving experimental poetry, avant garde literature, small press publications, Mail Art, visual poetry and related practices that had often remained outside traditional literary institutions. The Smithsonian Institution records that from 1998 Bennett served as curator of the Avant Writing Collection, the William Burroughs Collection and the Cervantes Collection at The Ohio State University Libraries. His curatorial work represents a direct extension of his artistic and editorial practice because it institutionalized materials that had often originated within independent correspondence networks, small presses and experimental publications.Between 1979 and 1986 Bennett also served as a Volunteer Poetry Therapist at the Central Ohio Psychiatric Hospital and received certification from the National Association for Poetry Therapy in 1985. This activity extends his engagement with language beyond publishing and performance into therapeutic and social contexts.Bennett's bibliography is exceptionally extensive. Over more than five decades he has published hundreds of books, chapbooks, pamphlets, recordings and related materials. Representative titles include Found Objects from 1973, Parts from 1974, White Screen from 1976, Do Not Cough Select Labels from 1976, Meat Watch from 1977, Motel Moods from 1980, Burning Dog from 1983, Swelling from 1988, Spinal Speech from 1995, Loose Watch from 1998, Mailer Leaves Ham from 1999, Chac Prostibulario with Ivan Argüelles from 2001, rOlling COMBers from 2001, The Peel from 2004, Glue from 2005, Instruction Book from 2006, Cantar Del Huff from 2006 and Sound Dirt with Jim Leftwich from 2006.He continued to publish steadily during subsequent decades. Documented titles include Mirrors Máscaras from 2014, Vertical Sleep and Un Checheo Incipiente from 2015, Select Poems from 2015, presenting more than forty years of his work, The Inexplicaciones of the Dreams of Bibana Padilla Maltos from 2016, Leg Mist from 2019, OJIJETE from 2020, Having Been Named from 2020 and Formatio Est. In 2024 he published 333 Names of Respiration and in 2025 IN ISIBLE and Nostrils of a Muscle Cloud with Stacey Allam, demonstrating continued production into the present decade. In 2010 Bennett's visual poetry was presented in a retrospective exhibition at Skylab Gallery in Columbus in conjunction with The Ohio State University's Avant Writing Symposium. The program also included an exhibition of Mail Art and visual poetry conceived as a tribute to Bennett's long activity in these fields. From January 12 through April 2, 2017, Spazio Ophen Virtual Art Gallery presented Experimental Visual Poetry, a solo exhibition of works by John M. Bennett created between 2014 and 2016 and organized by Giovanni Bonanno. The exhibition demonstrated the continued international circulation of Bennett's visual poetry during the twenty first century. The archival dimension of Bennett's career is exceptional. The Ohio State University preserves the John M. Bennett Publications Collection, documenting his production and circulation from 1940 through 1995 and containing books, journals, catalogues, Mail Art, exhibition documentation, recordings, correspondence and related publications. The Smithsonian Institution Archives of American Art preserves John M. Bennett mail art, a focused collection dating approximately from 1975 through 2018 and measuring 0.6 linear feet. It is particularly rich in Bennett's small pamphlets, known within the Mail Art community as TLPs, many of them self published through Luna Bisonte Prods.Washington University in St. Louis preserves the John M. Bennett Papers, covering 1956 through 2014 and measuring approximately 177 linear feet according to the archival reference supplied by the Smithsonian Institution. This constitutes one of the major documentary resources for research on Bennett's career and international network. The Poetry Collection at the University at Buffalo also preserves Bennett material and identifies the John M. Bennett Collection as one of the sources underlying its Mail Art Archive. The institution preserves extensive correspondence sent to Bennett by participants in the international network.John M. Bennett's historical importance results from the convergence of these activities. He is not simply an author of experimental poetry but simultaneously a producer, publisher, distributor, correspondent, performer, collaborator, collector and archivist. Through Luna Bisonte Prods and Lost and Found Times he helped create an infrastructure through which experimental artists and poets who frequently lacked access to commercial publishing or conventional institutions could circulate their work internationally. His work occupies an intersection among visual poetry, sound poetry, Mail Art, experimental literature, artists books, performance and intermedia practices. Language may appear printed, handwritten, spoken, recorded, distorted, fragmented, pasted, stamped or mailed. The medium is never neutral. Page, voice, envelope, tape, postcard, pamphlet and archive participate in the construction of the poem. His relationship to the Process Poem Movement should therefore be understood within this international system of connections rather than as formal membership. Bennett has not been identified in the consulted sources as a member of the movement. His participation in Multipostais in 1977, the Mostra de Arte Postal in Franca in 1980 and Multimedia UFRN in 1983, together with his relationships with numerous Latin American artists, nevertheless places his work directly within the expanded historical field in which Brazilian Process Poem, visual poetry, Mail Art and international experimental practices established sustained exchanges.John M. Bennett remains fundamental to an understanding of international alternative poetry and postal art networks from the 1970s onward. His legacy combines creation and preservation. In addition to producing an enormous body of verbal, visual and sound poetry, he contributed to building the archives through which relationships among experimental poets, mail artists, independent publishers and international collaborative networks can now be reconstructed across more than half a century.
