J. de Rook and in bibliographic records as Gerrit Jan De Rook, is a Dutch artist, visual poet, publisher, writer, art critic, researcher, curator and exhibition organizer. He was born in 1943. Specialist sources associate him with Utrecht, while the In Out Center archive states that he was living in Utrecht in the early 1970s and had been educated in Arnhem. His exact place of birth was not consistently established in the sources consulted. Related publications include Stamparttaal, issued by Daylight Press in Amsterdam in 1976 in connection with the Stamp Art exhibition at Other Books and So from 27 April to 15 May 1976, and Mail art: kunst per post, documented around 1976 and 1977.In 1976 he published Historische anthologie visuele poëzie in Brussels through Rijkscentrum Hoger Kunstonderwijs. It included his study Visuele poëzie in Nederland and contributed to establishing a historical narrative for visual poetry in the Netherlands within an international context. He later published De concrete en visuele poëzie in België en Nederland in a publication devoted to artistic relations between Belgium and the Netherlands after 1945.In 1977 De Rook organized an International Mail Art Exhibition in the Netherlands. The project is also documented in research concerning the Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade de São Paulo, which circulated information about the exhibition alongside other international mail art initiatives. This evidence confirms that the network developed by De Rook reached Brazilian institutions and artists. His relationship with the Process Poem Movement should therefore be understood as an international documentary and network connection rather than membership in the Brazilian movement.Also in 1977 De Rook edited and compiled Visuele Poëzie for the Nederlandse Kunststichting. The catalogue included major international figures in concrete and visual poetry such as Eugen Gomringer, Hansjörg Mayer, Ladislav Novák, Paul de Vree, Décio Pignatari, Mary Ellen Solt, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Lucia Marcucci, Ji?í Valoch and Václav Havel. The inclusion of Décio Pignatari also connected the publication with Brazilian concrete poetry.According to the In Out Center Archives, De Rook ceased regular artistic production in 1977 because he considered it incompatible with his new professional position at the Haags Gemeentemuseum, now Kunstmuseum Den Haag. The University of Groningen confirms that he worked for a long period at the museum beginning in 1977, while later documentation associates his institutional career with the period from 1977 to approximately 2002. This shift did not end his engagement with visual poetry or artists publishing. He continued researching, writing, curating exhibitions and preserving the history of experimental art.At the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag he worked as a curator and museum professional. In 1984 he curated a solo exhibition by Maarten Ploeg at the museum. His institutional activity expanded toward the modern and contemporary art of The Hague while retaining the knowledge formed through earlier independent publishing and artists initiatives.In 2007 and 2008 De Rook curated Eilandenrijk.
