Procissão NS Navegantes is a card by Vera Chaves Barcellos constructed through collage, photographic reproduction, printing and graphic intervention. The composition brings together two black and white images. On the left, a residential area appears with small buildings, wooden fences and clothes hanging outdoors. On the right, an image of boats gathered on the water records a river procession associated with Our Lady of Navigators.
Across the surface of the card, Vera Chaves Barcellos incorporates repeated red inscriptions reading Procissão NS Navegantes and prints her name, Vera C. Barcellos, in black. Rectangular red bands function as graphic and compositional elements, crossing and framing sections of the photographic images.
The juxtaposition of inhabited territory, boats, river circulation and religious reference structures the visual meaning of the work. Photography, text and collage operate as equivalent components of the composition, establishing a relationship between documentary imagery, appropriation and artistic intervention. The card belongs to the experimental practice of Vera Chaves Barcellos, characterized by the use of photography and procedures of reproduction, montage and displacement of images.
The front of the card contains two photographic reproductions combined with a graphic structure formed by red inscriptions, the name Vera C. Barcellos printed in black and rectangular red elements. The expression Procissão NS Navegantes appears repeatedly in different positions, including along the margins of the composition.
The reverse contains no visible message, address, postage stamp or postal cancellation. Only the repeated name Vera C. Barcellos appears in black, arranged both horizontally and vertically, together with material marks and small pieces of adhesive tape near the edges.
The abbreviation NS appearing on the card is interpreted in the Portuguese title as Nossa Senhora because of the expression Procissão NS Navegantes, while the original wording has been preserved in the Original Title field. No reliable date can be identified from the available images. There is also insufficient visible evidence to confirm that this particular copy actually circulated through the postal system.
