Habitat is a card by Vera Chaves Barcellos constructed through the combination of photography, printing, stamps, textual repetition and collage. On the front, a black and white photograph depicts a residential area with small buildings, wooden fences and clothes hanging outdoors. The image is framed by repeated inscriptions bearing the name Vera C. Barcellos and by the word Habitat, printed vertically in red along both sides.
The graphic organization transforms the card into a visual composition in which photography and language operate together. The repetition of the artist's name functions as both a graphic and authorial element, while Habitat establishes a direct semantic relationship with the landscape depicted in the photograph. On the reverse, the intervention continues with collaged newspaper classified advertisements for apartments, accompanied again by the inscriptions Habitat and Vera C. Barcellos. The juxtaposition of the photograph of popular housing with commercial apartment advertisements creates a relationship between image, housing, urban space and different representations of habitation.
The card employs experimental procedures associated with Vera Chaves Barcellos's artistic practice, combining photography, graphic reproduction, appropriated printed texts and interventions on a format associated with circulation and communication.
A grafia Vera C. Barcellos é aquela presente no próprio objeto.
The card contains interventions on both sides. On the front, a black and white photograph occupies the central area and is surrounded by repeated impressions of the name Vera C. Barcellos in black and the word Habitat in red. The spelling Vera C. Barcellos is the form visible on the object itself.
On the reverse, two newspaper classified advertisements concerning apartments for sale have been incorporated through collage. One refers to one and two bedroom apartments on Rua Anita Garibaldi and includes prices and financing conditions. Another advertises luxury apartments and lists characteristics of the building and individual units. These clippings function as material components of the composition and establish a direct relationship with the term Habitat printed on the card.
No production date, postal date, recipient or dimensions can be identified from the examined images. No postage stamp or postal cancellation is visible that would confirm that this particular example actually circulated through the mail. The object is therefore described as a postcard in terms of format without asserting documented postal circulation.
