Ofídio é uma impressão gráfica de Avelino de Araújo realizada em 2001, vinculada à poesia visual, à poesia experimental, à arte conceitual, à tipografia e às investigações intersígnicas relacionadas ao campo do Poema Processo. A composição apresenta dois grandes círculos pretos posicionados simetricamente nas extremidades de uma estrutura central semelhante à letra V. Dentro de cada círculo aparece uma forma tipográfica próxima ao sinal &, submetida a diferentes rotações e orientações. A organização visual transforma letras e sinais gráficos em uma figura que pode ser associada a uma serpente enrolada, a dois organismos circulares, a olhos ou a emblemas espelhados. O título Ofídio designa os répteis do grupo das serpentes e orienta a interpretação das linhas curvas, dos enrolamentos e das formas fechadas presentes na imagem. O sinal & possui curvas que lembram o movimento de um corpo serpentino dobrado sobre si mesmo. Sua inserção dentro de círculos reforça ideias de enrolamento, ciclo, proteção, aprisionamento, repetição e movimento contínuo. A estrutura central em forma de V estabelece uma separação e simultaneamente uma ligação entre os dois módulos laterais. Essa forma pode ser compreendida como eixo de simetria, bifurcação, língua de serpente, abertura, passagem ou sinal gráfico intermediário. A obra explora as relações entre organismo e alfabeto, figura animal e código tipográfico, leitura e reconhecimento visual. Os dois módulos apresentam semelhanças estruturais, mas diferem na orientação interna do sinal, criando um efeito de espelhamento e reversão. Avelino de Araújo transforma o caractere tipográfico em matéria plástica e constrói uma imagem ambígua que pode ser lida como palavra, símbolo, animal, máscara ou diagrama. The composition presents two large black circles positioned symmetrically on either side of a central structure resembling the letter V. Inside each circle appears a typographic form close to the ampersand sign, subjected to different rotations and orientations. The visual arrangement transforms letters and graphic signs into a figure that may be associated with a coiled serpent, two circular organisms, eyes or mirrored emblems. The title Ophidian refers to reptiles belonging to the group of snakes and guides the interpretation of the curved lines, coils and enclosed forms present in the image. The ampersand contains curves that resemble the movement of a serpentine body folded around itself. Its placement inside circles reinforces ideas of coiling, cycles, protection, confinement, repetition and continuous movement. The central V shaped structure creates a separation and at the same time a connection between the two lateral modules. This form may be understood as an axis of symmetry, bifurcation, serpent tongue, opening, passage or intermediate graphic sign. The composition creates bilateral balance, strong contrast and a visual association with coiled snakes. The central form consists of two diagonal strokes converging at a lower point and functions as both separation and connection between the circles.
