Scott Helmes - USA
A documentação institucional da University of Iowa identifica Scott Helmes como artista norte americano nascido em 1945 e preserva numerosos trabalhos seus no Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry. O Lomholt Mail Art Archive registra obras e correspondências suas desde 1978, incluindo A Length, The Trans Quiet Dressingroom, The Yellow Book, Umbrella, cartões postais, cartas e outros materiais enviados entre 1978 e 1982. Em 1991 realizou Breathing e Breathing #2 para a exposição The Beauty In Breathing. Poets and Writers registra sua participação em Art Postale, publicada em 1999, A Dictionary of the Avant Gardes, em 2000, e Writing to Be Seen, em 2001. Helmes participou também do Be Blank Consort, grupo dedicado à poesia sonora e experimental. Em 2009 realizou A Haibun for Ruth's Birthday, hoje preservado no Sackner Archive. Em dezembro de 2010 Redfoxpress publicou Poems From Then To Now na coleção C'est mon Dada. Sua produção posterior inclui 1000 Haiku, publicado pela Stamp Pad Press, e participação em The Last Vispo Anthology: Visual Poetry 1998 to 2008. Em 2021 obras de Scott Helmes participaram da exposição Visual Poetry on the Page: With, Within, and Without the Word, realizada pela Mainsite Contemporary Art Gallery em Norman, Oklahoma.
English
Scott Helmes, born October 27, 1945, in Fort Snelling, Minnesota, United States, is an American visual poet, artist, book artist, writer, photographer and architect. Since the early 1970s he has developed a body of work devoted to expanding the limits of written language through relationships among words, letters, typography, graphic space, image, printing, collage and reading. His practice occupies an important position within American visual and experimental poetry and is connected with concrete poetry, mail art, rubber stamp art, artists books, small press publishing, conceptual art, sound poetry and international alternative publishing networks. The University of Iowa identifies Scott Helmes as an American artist born in 1945 and preserves numerous works by him in the Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry.Helmes studied architecture at the University of Minnesota and received a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1968. Alongside his artistic work he maintained a professional career as an architect in Minnesota. Biographical documentation records positions at Feerts Sperl Flynn Architects from 1977 to 1980, Smiley Glotten Architects from 1980 to 1982, Park Nicollet Medical Foundation as director of design from 1982 to 1985 and later Skaaden Helmes Architects in Minneapolis as vice president. The coexistence of architecture and visual poetry is significant in understanding his sustained interest in spatial organization, structure, typography and relationships among graphic elements.Helmes began writing experimental poetry in 1972. His own account of this period records his encounter with new forms of language in experimental publications and his use of typographic materials and rubber stamps as compositional tools. By 1976 his work was being accepted for publication, marking his sustained entry into the international experimental poetry field. From that period onward his work circulated through little magazines, independent publications, exhibitions, postal networks and later major visual poetry anthologies.Helmes approaches poetry as an expanded visual practice. A poem may be constructed not only through syntactically organized words but through the physical appearance of letters, repetition, interruption, fragmentation, overlap and graphic transformation. His techniques include rubber stamps, stencils, typographic manipulation, Letraset, photocopy, collage and found printed material. Helmes has described his poetry as an attempt to stretch the limits of language, explore multiple concepts of meaning and encompass different modes of reading. His practice therefore moves beyond an exclusively oral or verbal conception of poetry and treats the page as a visual field.During the second half of the 1970s Helmes also became involved with mail art. The Lomholt Mail Art Archive documents works and correspondence beginning in 1978, including A Length, The Trans Quiet Dressingroom, The Yellow Book, Umbrella, postcards, letters and other network materials dating from 1978 through 1982. These records establish his active participation in international postal art networks in which experimental poetry, publications, graphic works and correspondence circulated directly among artists in different countries. In the late 1970s Helmes developed relationships that became important to his artistic history with Ruth and Marvin Sackner, major collectors and researchers of concrete and visual poetry, and with Richard Kostelanetz. Helmes later acknowledged the importance of Ruth Sackner, Marvin Sackner, Richard Kostelanetz, Karl Kempton and Kay Arndt as supporters of his work. The Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive preserves books, visual poems, collages and other works by Helmes and constitutes one of the principal institutional resources for research on his production.Untitled from 1978, preserved by the Art Institute of Chicago, demonstrates the entry of his work into major museum collections during this period. The museum identifies Scott Helmes as an American artist born in 1945.His presence in APM The Journal of Art, Performance and Manufacture provides further evidence of his participation in American experimental publishing. A promotional sheet for issue number 2, identified as the special mess o lit number, includes Helmes among its printed names and features a principal visual composition signed by Scott Helmes. The work uses fragmented typography, superimposition, erasure and partially recognizable letterforms, transforming text into visual material. This document directly connects Helmes with the editorial environment of APM and its intersection of visual poetry, new literature, graphic design and experimental publishing. In 1980 the work Mail Art Helmes is documented and is now preserved in the Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry. Its presence in a specialized collection confirms that Helmes's postal activity formed an integral part of his poetic and visual practice. In 1986 he produced Lettitex/cture, preserved in the Sackner Archive, and contributed to the portfolio Five Visual Poems published by The Hermetic Press. His work Language formed part of this portfolio of five broadsides of varying dimensions, each designed with or by Philip Gallo, who was also responsible for typesetting and printing through The Hermetic Press. Language is documented today by the Grolier Club and through the Steve Clay collection at Granary Books. The early 1990s provide important examples of his investigation of language. In 1991 he produced Breathing and Breathing #2 for The Beauty In Breathing exhibition. Breathing reduces the poem to the words In and Out, while Breathing #2 combines repeated rubber stamped impressions of those words with found printed texts and images in collage. The same year he produced the artists book Language Exposed. These works reveal Helmes's interest in expanding minimal verbal structures through repetition, appropriation and material construction. In 1997 Helmes published Poems 1972 to 1997 through Stamp Pad Press. The volume surveys twenty five years of experimental poetry and includes works reproduced from rubber stamping, line stencilling and Letraset collage. The copy preserved by the Sackner Archive belongs to an edition of fifty copies, twenty five of which were signed and numbered. The publication is a central document for tracing the formal development of his poetry from 1972 onward. His work subsequently entered major anthologies of visual and avant garde poetry. Poets and Writers records his inclusion in Art Postale in 1999, A Dictionary of the Avant Gardes in 2000 and Writing to Be Seen in 2001. The same source lists Non Additive Postulations, issued by Runaway Spoon Press in 2000.In 2000 he produced Typomusings, a book created by cutting pages from periodicals containing offset words and calligraphic material and reorganizing the fragments into new compositions. The work extends his investigations of appropriation, semantic fragmentation and graphic recombination and is preserved in the Sackner Archive.Collaboration became another important dimension of Helmes's career. With John M. Bennett he created D Rain B Loom, a volume of collaborative experimental visual poetry in which individual pages operate as jointly constructed poems. A documented printed edition released in 2007 contains 147 pages and identifies both Helmes and Bennett as authors.Helmes was also a founding member of the Be Blank Consort, a group devoted to experimental and sound poetry. This involvement expands his investigation of language beyond printed pages into vocal and performative dimensions. In 2007 he became one of the three editors of vispoeologee, a publication produced by the Minnesota Center for Book Arts and devoted to visual literature. John Bennett, Thomas Cassidy and Scott Helmes selected works by twenty seven international poets. The publication brought together visual poetry, concrete poetry and post language writing through a physical structure influenced by Fluxus publications and using varied papers, printing processes, colors and material interventions. The Minnesota Center for Book Arts records that the three editors originally met through mail art and had corresponded for decades. In 2008 Poetry magazine published haiku #62, one of Helmes's best documented visual poems. It belongs to a series produced from colored fragments of printed text torn from glossy magazines and arranged in three visual tiers that evoke the traditional structure of haiku while undermining ordinary linguistic reading. The Poetry Foundation identifies Helmes as a longtime visual poet who has also worked with mathematical poetry and rubber stamped poetry. The Ohio State University has played an important role in preserving his archive. Its Avant Writing Collection in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Library preserves Helmes's writing archive from 1972 through 1997. The university specifically identifies Scott Helmes among the writers and artists central to the collection, whose holdings encompass poetry, visual poetry, experimental writing, visual art, photography, sound art, performance, conceptual art, mail art and artists books.Helmes also participated in the 2008 publication Visual Poetry in the Avant Writing Collection, edited by John M. Bennett for The Ohio State University Libraries. In addition to contributing as an artist, Helmes designed the cover for the publication, which brought together more than one hundred international figures associated with visual and experimental poetry. In 2009 he produced A Haibun for Ruth's Birthday, preserved in the Sackner Archive, providing further evidence of his long relationship with Ruth Sackner and the visual poetry collecting tradition associated with the archive. In December 2010 Redfoxpress published Poems From Then To Now as part of the C'est mon Dada series. The A6 volume contains forty eight pages, laser printing and thread and cloth binding and gathers visual poetry, collage and rubber stamped works. Redfoxpress identifies Helmes as an international figure in experimental poetry since 1976.In 2011 he participated in Visual Flux number 2, an international visual poetry screen print portfolio published by Redfoxpress. The portfolio included Derek Beaulieu, Klaus Peter Dencker, Giovanni Fontana, Pierre Garnier, Scott Helmes and Nico Vassilakis. Forty five numbered and signed copies were produced using hand pulled screen printing on Arches Vellum paper. His participation alongside figures such as Pierre Garnier and Klaus Peter Dencker places Helmes in direct dialogue with several generations of international concrete and visual poetry.Later publications include 1000 Haiku through Stamp Pad Press and participation in The Last Vispo Anthology: Visual Poetry 1998 to 2008. In 2015 two of his works were included in The New Concrete, an international concrete poetry anthology published by Hayward Press in London. In 2017 thirteen poems appeared in the World Wide Visual Poetry issue of Kobitadihi. In 2018 an altered book by Helmes was presented in the Wallpaper exhibition at Traffic Zone.In April 2019 Redfoxpress published Recent Poems as number 130 in the C'est mon Dada series. The forty page book includes concrete poems, sonnets and haiku and demonstrates the continuing development of Helmes's work between verbal structure and visual composition. Also in 2019 Post Asemic Press published Magazine: The Cut Up Asemics, extending his practice into the field of asemic writing and typographic fragmentation. The book continues his long investigation of printed materials and structures in which writing shifts between legibility and image. In 2021 work by Scott Helmes was included in Visual Poetry on the Page: With, Within, and Without the Word at Mainsite Contemporary Art Gallery in Norman, Oklahoma. Documentation for the exhibition reproduces work by Helmes alongside Bill DiMichele.Scott Helmes holds an important position in the international history of visual poetry through more than five decades of work connecting poetry, artists books, mail art, rubber stamp art, collage, typography, photography and independent publishing. His work and archives are preserved by institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the University of Iowa through the Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry and The Ohio State University Libraries through the Avant Writing Collection. His historical relationships with John M. Bennett, Thomas Cassidy, Richard Kostelanetz, Ruth and Marvin Sackner and Bill Gaglione place his work within an international experimental poetry network that developed long before digital communication. No documentation has been located identifying Scott Helmes as a participant in the Brazilian Process Poem Movement. His relationship with this field is comparative and international, based on shared investigations of the material nature of signs, the transformation of words into visual structures and the international networks of visual poetry, mail art, artists books and experimental publishing that also connected Brazilian and Latin American artists.
