BIOGRAPHY IN ENGLISHThe Global Postal 84 Exhibition, also documented as Global Postale 84 Artist?s Stamps, was an international Mail Art and artistamp project developed through MINA, Museo Internationale de Neu Art, in Vancouver, Canada. Its international call circulated in 1980 and the submitted designs were scheduled to be exhibited in February 1981. The initiative used the artist stamp format as a medium for artistic creation, reproduction, circulation and exchange, connecting postal art practices with collective publishing and exhibition. The Poema Processo exhibition page records the event in February 1981 at MINA in Vancouver and directly links it to Collection 04922, Convite para a exposição Global Postale 84, Museo Internationale de Neu Art.The call preserved as Collection 04922 makes it possible to reconstruct the working method of the project. Participants were invited to contribute an image for a sheet of Global Postal 84 artist?s stamps. The image could be drawn, painted, collaged or prepared through another process suitable for graphic reproduction. All stamps were to be printed in black and white. The contribution had to be mounted on the card supplied by the organization and returned to MINA by January 15, 1981.Each submitted image was to be reduced to approximately one third of its original size and printed with 24 other images on a sheet containing 25 artistamps. The sheet would then be perforated, formally relating the collective publication to the visual and material structure of a conventional postage stamp sheet. Contributors were instructed to prepare images that could withstand reduction without significant loss of detail. Each participant would receive three sheets of the resulting stamps.Contemporary documentation published in Umbrella independently confirms the project in 1981. The publication records Global Postal 84 artist?s stamps as a call issued by MINA, Museo internationale de Neu Art, specifies black and white printing, states that contributors would receive three sheets, records that all designs would be exhibited at MINA during February, and gives January 15, 1981 as the deadline. The participation address was Global Postale 84, Box 3655, Vancouver, Canada V6B 3Y8.The Artpool Art Research Center also records Global Postale 84 Artist?s Stamps in its international Mail Art chronology for 1981, locating the exhibition at the Museo Internacional de Neu Art in Vancouver, Canada, and identifying Edwin Varney as the organizer. Artpool records both a call and a catalogue associated with the project. This archival attribution complements Collection 04922, where the surviving call bears the handwritten signature of Walt Dizzy, identified in the document as Le Directeur und Artzengraphis Animateur. The available evidence therefore distinguishes Edwin Varney, identified by an archival source as the organizer of Global Postale 84, from Walt Dizzy, whose name appears as the signatory of the invitation sent to J. Medeiros. The Brazilian circulation of the project is documented through the original envelope and invitation in Collection 04922. The ensemble was mailed from the Museo Internationale de Neu Art, Box 3655, Vancouver, to J. Medeiros at Rua Artur Bernardes 761, Alecrim, Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The envelope bears a Canadian 35 cent postage stamp and Vancouver postal cancellations dated November 27, 1980. Its survival in Natal documents the movement of the call between Canada and northeastern Brazil and places J. Medeiros among the recipients reached by the international network activated by the project. The invitation received by J. Medeiros is especially significant for documenting the exhibition because it directly connects Global Postale 84 with a Brazilian postal art network. The document, however, establishes that J. Medeiros received the call and does not by itself prove that he submitted an image or that his work was ultimately exhibited. Maintaining the distinction between the recipient of a call and a confirmed participant is essential for an accurate historical reconstruction of the network.Global Postale 84 belongs to the history of artistamps, a field within Mail Art in which the scale, reproduction, perforation and distributive logic of the postage stamp become artistic resources. In this project, each individual image was transformed into one component of a collective publication, reduced and positioned alongside 24 other contributions. The resulting structure combined individual authorship, graphic editing, multiplication and international postal circulation.Later archival records also document subsequent developments associated with Global Postale 84. The Lomholt Mail Art Archive preserves material connected with Edwin Varney and the Museo Internacionale de Neu Art and includes J. Medeiros among numerous names associated with the documentary group. Other specialized records describe a later Global Postale 84 Stamp Edition consisting of five artistamp sheets. These later records should be distinguished from the 1980 and 1981 call and exhibition because they document subsequent stages of edition or circulation and do not alter the date of the surviving invitation or the exhibition period stated for February 1981.The Global Postal 84 Exhibition therefore constitutes significant documentation of transnational Mail Art networks connecting Vancouver, Natal and other centers of experimental artistic activity. Collection 04922 on the Poema Processo website provides primary evidence of this circulation by connecting MINA, Museo Internationale de Neu Art, Global Postale 84, Walt Dizzy, Edwin Varney, Vancouver, J. Medeiros, Natal, Mail Art, postal art and artistamps within a single documentary context.
