BIOGRAPHY IN ENGLISHArtistampex was an international exhibition devoted to artistamps, artists stamps, alternative philately and Mail Art, held from 1 to 9 June 1984 at Forest City Gallery in London, Ontario, Canada. The event was organized by Michael Bidner, also referred to as Mike Bidner, an artist, researcher, collector and participant in the international mail art network. The Artpool Mail Art chronology records Artistampex as taking place from 1 to 9 June 1984 at Forest City Gallery, with Bidner as organizer and with artistamps, photographs and a poster among the surviving documents related to the event. The exhibition material uses the title Artistampex and the designation Inaugural Cinderella Philatelic Artistamp Exposition Bourse, together with the description A Mail Art Event. The poster identifies Forest City Gallery, 231 Dundas Street, 2nd floor, London, Ontario, Canada, and presents the event as a meeting point between experimental philatelic practices, artists stamps and postal circulation. The term Cinderella Philatelic refers to unofficial or non postal philatelic material, while artistamp identifies a stamp conceived as an artwork or artistic medium rather than as an officially issued postage stamp.Michael Bidner played an important role in establishing the term artistamp. The Michael Bidner fonds at the Art Gallery of Ontario documents his interest in philately and mail art, his use of the word artistamp for postage art, and his organization of Artistampex in London, Ontario, in 1984. The archive also records his subsequent work on the Standard Artistamp Catalogue and Handbook, conceived as a systematic database and catalogue of artists and artistamp production. One of the printed documents associated with Artistampex announces that a Canadian philatelist was compiling a comprehensive catalogue and album of artist stamps. The notice requested information about known artist stamps and private printings and accepted slides, originals, photocopies, photographs and proofs for documentation purposes. Replies were directed to Mike at Artistamps, Box 3, Station B, London, Ontario, Canada. The document therefore links Artistampex directly with Bidner's broader project of collecting, documenting and cataloguing artistamp production.Artistampex combined an exhibition with a bourse, creating a setting for both presentation and philatelic exchange. Academic research on Canadian Mail Art describes the 1984 project organized by Michael Bidner as an event that incorporated artistamps into a philatelic exchange context. A historical reference on Mail Art likewise records Artistampex under the alternative designation Cinderella Philately or Artistamp Exhibition and notes that posters, invitation flyers and cards circulated in connection with the exhibition. The international scale of the event is documented in later accounts of Bidner's activities. A text published in Eternal Network, A Mail Art Anthology states that Artistampex brought together artistamps by more than one thousand international artists, covering the Forest City Gallery walls with stamp related works. This scale connects Artistampex directly with the international expansion of Mail Art and with the development of the artistamp as a distinct artistic format during the 1980s.The surviving material presented here includes an Artistampex document sent to Brazilian artist Falves Silva. This establishes documentary evidence of the circulation of the Canadian project to Brazil and places Falves Silva within the distribution network for information concerning Artistampex. The surviving item alone does not establish that Falves Silva actually exhibited in the event, but it does document his receipt of material associated with it.Artistampex holds a documented position in the history of artistamps and Mail Art because it brought together exhibition practice, exchange, documentation, experimental philately and international postal circulation. Michael Bidner's project connected artistic creation with postal systems and transformed the stamp into a medium for visual production, artistic identity, communication and exchange across international networks. A substantial part of Bidner's artistamp collection and related documentation was later transferred to the Artpool Art Research Center in Budapest, preserving materials connected with his activities and with the historical development of artistamps.
