Segundo a documentação do IRCAM, o compositor considera o texto elemento estruturador e a voz principal vetor expressivo nesse campo. BIOGRAPHY IN ENGLISHGeorges Aperghis is a French composer of Greek descent, born on December 23, 1945 in Athens, Greece, and based in Paris since 1963. His work occupies a central position in European contemporary music, particularly within musical theatre, vocal music, instrumental composition, opera, performance, electroacoustic music and experimental investigations of language. Aperghis has developed a body of work in which voice, text, phoneme, gesture, bodily movement, theatrical interpretation, scenography, image and musical writing can function as components of a single dramaturgical structure. IRCAM identifies him as a French composer of Greek descent and documents a catalogue containing more than one hundred works. The son of a sculptor and a painter, Aperghis grew up in an environment closely connected with visual art and initially hesitated between visual expression and musical composition. His musical education was essentially self directed. He discovered music through radio broadcasts and received piano lessons from a family friend. This early proximity to both visual art and music helps explain the interdisciplinary character that later became fundamental to his production. In 1963 he moved to Paris, where he encountered some of the major currents of European experimental music. He discovered serialism through the Domaine Musical, became familiar with the musique concrète of Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry and followed the research of Iannis Xenakis. Xenakis was particularly influential on his early compositions, although around 1970 Aperghis began developing an increasingly independent and personal language. This transformation led him toward a conception of music in which sound could not be separated from gesture, words or theatrical situations. In 1971 he composed La Tragique Histoire du nécromancien Hiéronimo et de son miroir, generally identified as his first musical theatre work. The piece closely connects music, text and stage action and established a dramaturgical investigation that would remain essential throughout his career. In 1976 Aperghis founded ATEM, Atelier Théâtre et Musique, a decisive project in his own development and in the history of contemporary French musical theatre. ATEM was initially based in Bagnolet and later at the Théâtre des Amandiers in Nanterre from 1992 until 1997. The ensemble enabled him to work directly with musicians, singers, actors and visual artists, developing pieces in which creation, rehearsal and interpretation were as significant as the written musical score.ATEM helped consolidate a form of musical theatre distinct from both traditional opera and theatre accompanied by music. Aperghis created situations in which musical material itself generated behavior, movement, conflict and scenic events. Fragments of language, phonemes, repetition, failures of communication and gradual transformations of words became both musical and theatrical structures. One of the fundamental works from this period is Récitations, composed in 1978 for solo female voice. The series explores relationships between language and music through phonemes, syllables, verbal fragments, repetition, rhythm, acceleration and vocal transformation. Rather than using text exclusively as a carrier of semantic meaning, Aperghis investigates its sonic, physical and articulatory dimensions. The work became one of the principal references for his research into voice and language. Also in 1978 he composed the opera Je vous dis que je suis mort. During the following years he continued to create works for musical theatre, voice, instruments and ensembles. His instrumental music frequently possesses dramaturgical qualities even in the absence of actors or a stage. IRCAM notes that theatrical and verbal elements remain present even in instrumental works such as Quatre Récitations for cello from 1980.The relationship between music and language is one of the foundations of his work. Aperghis frequently fragments words until their conventional meanings become unstable. Phonemes, vocal noises and articulatory gestures become musical structures. At other times apparently unrelated fragments accumulate until narratives seem to emerge and then immediately dissolve. His official site emphasizes his persistent questioning of languages and meaning and his exploration of the boundaries of intelligibility. This research places his music in significant dialogue with sound poetry and experimental poetry, although Aperghis belongs primarily to the field of contemporary musical composition and musical theatre. His use of the voice as sonic material, fragmentation of words, phonetic structures and independence between sound and semantic meaning creates strong comparative connections with international sound poetry, phonetic poetry and vocal performance. In 1992 he composed L'Origine des espèces for six performers, continuing his investigation into collective organization, language, music and stage action. During the 1990s his work further expanded the mechanisms through which text, music, performance and theatricality could interact. The year 2000 marked another major moment in his career. Die Hamletmaschine Oratorio, based on a text by Heiner Müller, and Machinations, a musical performance commissioned by IRCAM, received premieres that circulated widely in Europe. Machinations uses four female performers and technological devices to investigate voice, language, gesture and machine. SACEM awarded the work its prize for the best premiere of the year.Machinations is particularly important for understanding Aperghis's relationship with digital creation. Technology does not replace the body or the voice. Instead, it expands the possibilities of transformation, repetition, fragmentation and recombination of sounds produced by performers. In this way music, theatre, performance and electronic devices become interconnected.Opera represents a field of synthesis in Aperghis's work. According to IRCAM, text becomes a determining and unifying element while the voice functions as the principal expressive vector. His catalogue includes several lyric works and projects combining dramaturgy, vocal composition and scenic experimentation. In 2004 Avis de Tempête premiered at the Opéra de Lille. The work received the Grand Prix de la Critique in 2005. In the same year he composed Dark Side, based on Aeschylus's Oresteia. These works demonstrate his continuing use of literary, mythological and dramatic sources as starting points for independent musical structures. In 2006 Wölfli Kantata, based on texts by Adolf Wölfli, was premiered together with Contretemps. The choice of Wölfli, a Swiss artist whose production combined writing, drawing, numbers and imaginary systems, corresponds closely with Aperghis's interest in relations among language, signs, images and mental construction. In December 2007 Le petit poucet premiered, based on the tale by Charles Perrault and created in collaboration with visual artist and video maker Hans Op de Beeck. This collaboration again demonstrates the interdisciplinary nature of Aperghis's practice by incorporating visual and scenographic resources into musical construction. In May 2010 the Opéra Comique in Paris presented Les Boulingrin, an opéra bouffe based on Georges Courteline and staged by Jérôme Deschamps. In June 2011 Luna Park premiered as a joint commission from IRCAM Centre Pompidou and the Warsaw Autumn Festival, with a text by François Regnault. Luna Park investigates the relationship between physical reality and virtual environments and integrates contemporary technology into its dramaturgy.Between 2012 and 2014 Aperghis developed a series of Six Études for large orchestra, commissioned by Westdeutscher Rundfunk and the Musica Festival in Strasbourg. This body of work demonstrates that his research does not depend on the presence of text or theatre. Even within orchestral writing, repetition, conflict, interruption, transformation and juxtaposition create a form of purely musical dramaturgy. In 2016 his Concerto pour accordéon premiered at Musica Viva with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks conducted by Emilio Pomarico. In 2018 he was a featured artist at IRCAM's ManiFeste festival, where Thinking Things premiered and Obstinate for solo double bass received its French premiere. His production has continued intensively throughout the 2020s. IRCAM's updated catalogue documents Die Erdfabrik from 2022, a multimedia chamber music theatre work, La construction du monde from 2022, Selfie in the dark from 2022 and 2023, Quatuor à cordes No. 1 from 2023, Heart blowing from 2023, Tell Tales from 2023 and 2024, Quatuor à cordes No. 2 from 2024, Aye aye requiem from 2024, Concerto pour piano et orchestre from 2025 and Trompe oreille from 2025 for trumpet and electronics. In addition to composing, Aperghis has produced texts and publications concerning his creative practice. IRCAM documents Zig Bang, published by P.O.L. in Paris in 2004. Machinations de Georges Aperghis, edited by Peter Szendy and published by IRCAM and L'Harmattan in 2001, provides major critical documentation for one of his central works. Conversation imagée 2019 2021, a dialogue between Georges Aperghis and Nicolas Donin, was published by Éditions de la Philharmonie de Paris in 2022.Aperghis has received major international distinctions. He received the Mauricio Kagel Music Prize in 2011, the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale in 2015 and the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Contemporary Music in 2016. In 2021 he received the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize from the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in recognition of his body of work. His historical importance lies above all in the creation of a distinctive territory between composition, theatre, language and performance. Aperghis does not treat music, words and stage action as independent layers. Each component can transform the others. A gesture may determine a rhythm. A phoneme may generate a musical structure. Difficulty in pronunciation may become dramatic material. Repetition may simultaneously transform meaning, sound and behavior. This logic places his work in dialogue with intermedia practices and with certain aspects of international experimental poetry. No documentation was located establishing Georges Aperghis as a participant in the Brazilian Process Poem Movement, Brazilian visual poetry or Mail Art networks. Connections with these fields should therefore be understood comparatively and historiographically, especially through his exploration of the materiality of language, phonemes, voice, repetition, semantic disruption, performance and non narrative systems. For research concerning the Process Poem Movement, experimental poetry and sound poetry, Aperghis is particularly relevant because his work demonstrates another historical direction for the breakdown of discursive language. Where certain visual experiments transformed letters and words into spatial structures, Aperghis transforms linguistic elements into sonic, temporal, bodily and theatrical structures. The sign can therefore exist simultaneously as sound, movement and event.Georges Aperghis remains active and his catalogue continues to expand. His career connects Athens and Paris, visual art and music, voice and instruments, theatre and technology, interpretation and composition. The continuity of his production from the 1960s into the twenty first century makes him a major reference for contemporary music, musical theatre, vocal performance, experimental opera, instrumental composition, electronic music and the relationships between sound and language.

Aperghis's work has an important comparative relationship with sound poetry, phonetic poetry and experimental poetry because of his use of the voice as material, decomposition of words, phonemic structures, repetition, verbal rhythm, semantic disruption and transformation of speech into musical and performative structures.Aperghis should primarily be catalogued as a composer and creator of musical theatre. No documentation was located identifying him as a member of a specific sound poetry movement.RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PROCESS POEM MOVEMENTNo documentation was located establishing Georges Aperghis as a participant in the Brazilian Process Poem Movement. His relevance to comparative research lies in the transformation of conventional language into sonic, gestural and temporal structures, a field that can be compared with the visual and semantic transformations investigated by the Process Poem Movement and Brazilian experimental poetry.ARCHIVES AND DOCUMENTATIONIRCAMParisMaintains a biography, chronological catalogue, documentation of works, texts, interviews, sound recordings and audiovisual resources concerning Georges Aperghis.Philharmonie de ParisParisEditorial documentation and publication of Conversation imagée 2019 2021.CATALOGUE OF WORKSIRCAM documents more than one hundred compositions by Aperghis and maintains an updated catalogue including works produced through 2025.CHRONOLOGY1945Born in Athens on December 23.1963Moves to Paris.Encounters the Domaine Musical, Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry and the work of Iannis Xenakis.1970Development of a more independent compositional language.1971La Tragique Histoire du nécromancien Hiéronimo et de son miroir.1976Foundation of ATEM.1978Récitations.Je vous dis que je suis mort.1980Quatre Récitations for cello.1992L'Origine des espèces.1992 to 1997ATEM based at Théâtre des Amandiers in Nanterre.2000Die Hamletmaschine Oratorio.Machinations.SACEM award for best premiere for Machinations.2001Publication of Machinations de Georges Aperghis edited by Peter Szendy.2004Avis de Tempête.Dark Side.Publication of Zig Bang.2005Grand Prix de la Critique for Avis de Tempête.2006Wölfli Kantata.Contretemps.2007Le petit poucet.2010Les Boulingrin at Opéra Comique.2011Luna Park.Mauricio Kagel Music Prize.2012 to 2014Six Études for large orchestra.2015Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale.2016Concerto pour accordéon.BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award.2018Thinking Things.French premiere of Obstinate.Featured artist at IRCAM ManiFeste.2021Ernst von Siemens Music Prize.2022Die Erdfabrik.La construction du monde.Beginning of Selfie in the dark.Publication of Conversation imagée 2019 2021.2023Quatuor à cordes No. 1.Heart blowing.Étude VIII.Tell Tales.2024Quatuor à cordes No. 2.Aye aye requiem.Willy Willy.Continuation of Tell Tales.2025Concerto pour piano et orchestre.Trompe oreille.
