BIOGRAPHY IN ENGLISHAxel Heibel is a German artist born on 23 September 1943 in Lahnstein, Germany, associated with contemporary art, conceptual practices, three dimensional objects, drawing, photography, artists books, bookworks and book objects. Although his 1982 correspondence with J. Medeiros was sent from Paris, Heibel is not a French artist. His career is German, with a longstanding association with Düsseldorf, while his presence in Paris was connected in part to a grant from the Ministry of Culture of North Rhine Westphalia for 1981 and 1982. He has lived and worked in Düsseldorf since 1975. His practice occupies an important position within the history of the European artists book through his investigation of the book as a spatial, sequential and manipulable structure in which pages, folds, cuts, transparency, photography and binding become integral elements of the artwork.Heibel studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg between 1968 and 1972. Biographical sources also record earlier studies at the Werkkunstschule in Offenbach beginning in 1967. His first solo museum exhibition took place at Museum Folkwang in Essen in 1972. In 1973 he presented Der Teil und das Ganze at the Hamburger Kunsthalle from 12 April to 13 May. His practice encompasses three dimensional objects, wall objects, drawing, painting, photography, artists books, bookworks and book objects. Beginning in 1976 he developed a sustained investigation into the physical and sequential structure of the book, becoming an important participant in the international artists book circuit.
