BIOGRAPHY IN ENGLISHMirella Bentivoglio was an Italian artist, poet, writer, art critic, art historian, researcher and curator and a major figure in Concrete Poetry, Visual Poetry, verbo visual art, artists books, object poetry, performance and intermedia experimentation during the twentieth century. She was born in Klagenfurt, Austria, on 28 March 1922 to Italian parents, grew up in Milan and died in Rome on 23 March 2017. Although the initial information describes her as an artist from Turin, the principal museum and biographical sources consulted do not identify Turin as her birthplace or primary city of residence. The National Museum of Women in the Arts records her birth in Klagenfurt, upbringing in Milan and death in Rome. Turin should therefore only be associated with her catalogue record when a specific collection document establishes activity, correspondence, exhibition history or an address in that city.Bentivoglio received an international linguistic education. She studied in German speaking Switzerland and in London and developed an unusually close relationship with different languages. During the Second World War, when her formal studies were interrupted, she used her father's extensive library as a form of home university. This multilingual background became fundamental to her later investigation of words, letters, signs, reading and the material transformation of language. Her literary activity preceded her visual work. In 1943 she published Giardino with Scheiwiller. In 1963 she published a monographic study of Ben Shahn with De Luca. In 1968 she published Calendario with Vallecchi. During the 1960s her research progressively moved away from poetry confined to the conventional printed page and toward Concrete Poetry and Visual Poetry, transforming letters, words, typographic space, images and objects into components of a unified artistic construction. She detached words from traditional syntax, isolated letters and investigated semantic ambiguity, converting verbal language into visual symbol and metaphor. From the 1960s onward Bentivoglio became one of the major Italian protagonists of verbo visual experimentation. Her practice encompassed Concrete Poetry, Visual Poetry, visual writing, collage, printmaking, photography, objects, sculpture, artists books, installation, performance, sound poetry and environmental interventions. The book ceased to function solely as a vehicle for reading and became physical object, architecture, matter and metaphor. The National Museum of Women in the Arts notes that her unique artists books incorporated unconventional materials including marble, wood, metal and earth.Works such as Successo from 1968 and Fiore nero from 1971 demonstrate her investigation of the convergence of language and visual structure. During the 1970s Bentivoglio developed a particular interest in the letters E and O, simultaneously exploring their phonetic value, linguistic meaning and graphic form. The letter E could suggest connection and relationship, while the O increasingly became associated with the form of the egg, which would recur throughout her sculptures, book objects and environmental works. In 1974 she created Poema Totale, bringing the book and the egg together within her investigation of language transformed into matter. In 1975 she produced To Malherbe, also known as À Malherbe, an onyx work shaped as an open book with an egg positioned at its center. The National Museum of Women in the Arts preserves this object in its permanent collection, documenting Bentivoglio's combination of the book object, mineral material and poetic reference. Her investigation of the egg assumed monumental form in Gubbio. In 1976 Bentivoglio produced Struttura simbolica, also known as Ovo di Gubbio, which became one of her most recognizable public works. In the same context she created Poesia all albero, a participatory action that transformed written language into an environmental intervention. In 1979 she created Arbor inversa, and between 1982 and 1985 she developed L uovo nella caverna in underground spaces in Umbria. These works demonstrate the expansion of her practice from the page into the territory and establish relationships among word, nature, body, space and participation.Bentivoglio's career was also deeply connected with the book as an artistic object. She investigated open books, closed books, stone books, sculptural books, transformed pages and symbolic relationships among book, egg, tree and architecture. Her production helped expand the concept of the artist book from a primarily editorial format into a sculptural, conceptual and poetic field. The National Museum of Women in the Arts repeatedly presented her work in exhibitions devoted to artists books beginning in 1987.Alongside her artistic production Mirella Bentivoglio developed significant critical and historical research. In 1978 she wrote the entry Poesia visiva for the supplement to the Enciclopedia Universale dell Arte at the invitation of Giulio Carlo Argan. Her theoretical writing investigated the development of visualized language from Futurism through contemporary experimentation and provided important conceptual tools for the study of Concrete Poetry, Visual Poetry and verbo visual art.Bentivoglio also played a fundamental role as a researcher and curator of women artists. Over several decades she organized exhibitions recovering and presenting artistic practices frequently marginalized by dominant historical narratives. Her most influential curatorial project was Materializzazione del linguaggio at the 38th Venice Biennale in 1978. Opened on 20 September at the Magazzini del Sale alle Zattere, the exhibition brought together verbo visual research by approximately eighty international women artists. The official archive of the Biennale records 154 works of different types, including poems, illustrations and artists books.Materializzazione del linguaggio became a landmark in the history of research into language, materiality, experimental poetry and women's artistic production. It assembled practices in which letters, writing, voice, photography, objects, books and the body exceeded conventional disciplinary categories. Its historical significance was reaffirmed in 2022 through an anastatic reprint of the original catalogue by La Biennale di Venezia and through the project Ri Materializzazione del linguaggio 1978 2022 at Fondazione Antonio Dalle Nogare. Her international curatorial activity included Poesia Visiva in Rome in 1974, 5 xilografi del Rio de La Plata in Savona in 1975, Parola immagine oggetto at the Italian Cultural Institute in Tokyo in 1976, From Page to Space at Columbia University in New York in 1979, Not(e)Books at the University of Melbourne in 1982 and 1983, Volùmina at Rocca Roveresca in Senigallia in 1988, From Page to Space Futurist Women Artists between Language and Image in Helsinki in 1998, Fotoalchimìe at Centro per l Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci in Prato in 2000, S(cripturae) in Padua in 2001 and Le futuriste italiane nelle arti visive in Senigallia in 2009.Her research into women artists associated with Futurism also resulted in Le futuriste italiane nelle arti visive, coauthored with Franca Zoccoli and published by De Luca in 2008. This study expanded earlier research published in English by Midmarch Arts Press in New York in 1997 and contributed significantly to the historical recovery of women within Italian Futurism.Mirella Bentivoglio's connection with Mail Art is firmly documented and should form part of her catalogue record, although her artistic identity should not be reduced exclusively to postal art. In 1975 her name appears within the international STEMPELKUNST network alongside Anna Banana, Paulo Bruscky, Robert Filliou, Graciela Gutiérrez Marx, Maurizio Nannucci, Clemente Padín, Robert Rehfeldt, Endre Tót, Ji?í Valoch and Horacio Zabala. This documentation places Bentivoglio within an international environment combining Mail Art, rubber stamp practices, Visual Poetry and graphic experimentation. In 1979 Bentivoglio appears in documentation relating to Núcleo de Multimedia associated with Tadeu Junges, providing another record of her circulation through networks of postal art and experimental poetry. In 1981 she participated in the major international Mail Art section of the 16th São Paulo Biennial. Documentation preserved by the Lomholt Mail Art Archive records Mirella Bentivoglio alongside hundreds of Brazilian and international participants including Paulo Bruscky, Falves Silva, J. Medeiros, Guglielmo Achille Cavellini, Edgardo Antonio Vigo, Clemente Padín, Guillermo Deisler, Maurizio Nannucci, Vittore Baroni, Giovanni Fontana and Leonhard Frank Duch. This constitutes a direct documentary connection between Bentivoglio and the Brazilian environment of Mail Art, Visual Poetry and experimental art.The simultaneous presence of Mirella Bentivoglio and J. Medeiros within the Mail Art section of the 16th São Paulo Biennial is particularly relevant to Brazilian archival research. It does not by itself demonstrate personal correspondence between them, but it confirms their participation within the same international network institutionalized by the Biennial in 1981. The same documentation includes Falves Silva, Paulo Bruscky and other Brazilian artists associated with experimental and postal networks. In October 1981 Bentivoglio also appears in Llibres d artista, associated with Metronom, within an extensive international network dedicated to artists books and independent publications. Participants included Paulo Bruscky, Vittore Baroni, Ulises Carrión, Artur Barrio and numerous international artists. This document reinforces the intersection between Bentivoglio's research into the artist book and alternative systems of artistic circulation. Her work is also documented in Post Arte in 1981, a Mail Art project containing work by Bentivoglio alongside Joseph Wolfgang Huber and other international participants. In 1982 Bentivoglio was included in the World Art Atlas organized within the network associated with Guy Bleus. This international mapping of artists connected through correspondence, independent publishing and networking demonstrates that Bentivoglio circulated not only through institutional Visual Poetry exhibitions but also through the transnational infrastructure of Mail Art.During the same period she participated in Arts for Surviving, Kunst zum Überleben, associated with the Mail Art Workshop in Bergkamen, Germany, where her work appeared alongside contributions by Edgardo Antonio Vigo, Leonhard Frank Duch and other artists. In November 1982 her name also appears among participants in Mai(a)l art, an international project associated with Romano Peli, together with John M. Bennett, Vittore Baroni, Guglielmo Achille Cavellini, Giovanni Fontana, Dick Higgins, Ray Johnson, Ruggero Maggi, Clemente Padín, Robert Rehfeldt, Endre Tót and numerous other artists.Bentivoglio maintained extensive international activity as an artist, performer, lecturer and curator. She presented sound poetry performances in Italian theaters and art spaces as well as in Los Angeles and at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. She gave courses, seminars, conferences and lectures at the University of Freiburg, in Oxford, at Italian Cultural Institutes in New York, Washington, Helsinki and Prague, at Musashino University in Tokyo, Osaka University of Arts, Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado in São Paulo and Ca Foscari University in Venice. Her relationship with Brazil extended beyond the 16th São Paulo Biennial. The Mirella Bentivoglio Archive records curatorial activities connected with the biennials of São Paulo and Medellín, the Museum of Recife and other international institutions. It also records her academic activity at Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado in São Paulo. The Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo preserves her work, placing Bentivoglio within an institutional history of artistic exchange between Italy and Brazil. No evidence was located establishing Mirella Bentivoglio as a participant in the historical Brazilian Process Poem Movement. Her relationship with that field should be defined through historical and conceptual proximity and through circulation within shared networks. Bentivoglio and artists associated with Poema Processo investigated, in different ways, the materiality of signs, the visual dimension of words, the rejection of conventional verse, participation and alternative circulation. Documentation from the Mail Art section of the 16th São Paulo Biennial places Bentivoglio within the same circuit as J. Medeiros and Falves Silva, but this should not be transformed into a claim that she belonged to Poema Processo.Bentivoglio received extensive institutional recognition. The National Museum of Women in the Arts organized The Visual Poetry of Mirella Bentivoglio in 1999 and repeatedly presented her work in exhibitions devoted to artists books between 1987 and 2012. In 2011 and 2012 the Mart presented Poesia Visiva. La donazione di Mirella Bentivoglio, connected with her donation of approximately three hundred works. In 2015 Pomona College Museum of Art organized PAGES: Mirella Bentivoglio, Selected Works 1966 2012, presenting more than sixty works including prints, photographs, sculpture and video. In 2022, the centenary of her birth, the Galleria Nazionale d Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome presented the major retrospective Quanto Bentivoglio? in collaboration with the Archivio Mirella Bentivoglio. The centenary was also marked by international reassessments of her work and by the reconstruction and critical recontextualization of Materializzazione del linguaggio.Documentation relating to Mirella Bentivoglio is preserved particularly extensively at the Mart, Museo di arte moderna e contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto. The Mirella Bentivoglio Papers contain documents dating from 1966 to 2006. The associated library comprises 238 books and pamphlets published between 1962 and 2010 documenting Visual Poetry, verbo visual experimentation and women's art. Her writings and approximately seventy artists books by women form the central nucleus of this collection.Works by Mirella Bentivoglio are preserved in permanent collections including the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Getty Institute in Los Angeles, the Galleria Nazionale d Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome, the Galleria d Arte Moderna of Roma Capitale, the Mart in Rovereto, the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo, the Uffizi Galleries in Florence, the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale in Florence, MACTE in Termoli and museums in Gubbio, Macerata, Matera, Gallarate and Venice.Mirella Bentivoglio occupies a central historical position because she integrated artistic production, poetry, criticism, historical research and curatorial practice into a single intellectual trajectory. Her work transformed words into matter, books into sculpture, pages into space, signs into objects and reading into embodied experience. Her documented participation in Mail Art circuits extends this trajectory into networked communication, connecting her production with international practices of correspondence, independent publishing, artists books and decentralized circulation. Her importance for an archive devoted to Poema Processo, Visual Poetry and Mail Art lies precisely in this convergence. Bentivoglio was not a member of Poema Processo, but she shared with Brazilian artists a radical rethinking of relationships among word, image, object and circulation. Her documented presence alongside J. Medeiros, Falves Silva, Paulo Bruscky, Edgardo Antonio Vigo, Clemente Padín, Guillermo Deisler, Guglielmo Achille Cavellini, Vittore Baroni and other international networkers establishes a historically grounded framework for comparative research and digital indexing.
