E. F. Higgins III - Ed Higgins - NY USA
A University of Iowa Libraries preserva o E. F. Higgins III Collection, identificação MsC0855, integrante da Alternative Traditions in the Contemporary Arts Collection. Higgins III, His Life, Art, Legend, de Istvan Kantor, obra dedicada à vida, produção e ambiente artístico de Higgins.
English
Edward F. Higgins III, widely known as E. F. Higgins III, Ed Higgins and Edward Higgins III, was an American artist associated with mail art, artistamps, painting, printmaking, collage, postal art, performance, sculpture and the independent art communities of New York City Lower East Side. He was born on November 10, 1949, in Racine, Wisconsin, grew up in the Chicago area and later lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He died on December 16, 2021, at the age of 72. His historical importance within the international mail art network is closely associated with the creation and long development of Doo Da Post and Doo Da Postage Works, an imaginary postal system through which Higgins produced and circulated hundreds of editions of artist stamps.Higgins developed an interest in postage stamps and rubber stamps during childhood. He carved stamps at an early age and collected postage stamps, establishing a lasting connection between image making, printing, repetition, circulation and communication. After his family moved to Ann Arbor, he attended poetry and art classes and produced welded sculpture. His experience with welding, printing, typography and commercial graphic processes would later enter several areas of his artistic practice. He studied Fine Arts at Western Michigan University, leaving shortly before completing the program. He later continued his education at the University of Colorado, where he received his undergraduate degree and an MFA in 1976, concentrating on painting and printmaking. During his university years Higgins became interested in commercially produced two dimensional graphic objects, including posters, postcards, play money, certificates, stamps, envelopes, maps, blueprints, labels and letterheads. These materials became central to the development of his later visual language.Around 1975 Higgins entered the international mail art network. In his later interview with Ruud Janssen, he recalled that the visiting artist Edwin Golik Golikoff introduced him to mail art and to artists including Buster Cleveland, Ray Johnson and Anna Banana. Higgins then began mailing stamps, collages and related works. In 1975 he produced his first sheets of Doo Da artist stamps using offset printing, initially with the assistance of Jim Green.Doo Da Post became the best known component of his artistic identity. Higgins invented Doo Da as an imaginary country that could provide his stamps with a fictional national origin. He frequently used the denomination 3P as an invented postal value and developed the Wingnut as the recurring emblem of Doo Da. The image consisted of a winged hardware nut and reflected Higgins characteristic humor and his interest in eccentric visual identities. Country, currency, symbol, stamps, postal cancellations and correspondence consequently operated together as an alternative postal system created by the artist. Many of Higgins artistamps originated as paintings. He would create an image at a larger scale, often as a painting or portrait, photograph it, reduce it and transform it into a stamp. The resulting sheets could then be printed, perforated, signed, numbered and circulated. This process enabled an image to move from the status of a unique painting to a multiple capable of circulating internationally through the postal network. Portraits, invented figures, animals, fishing lures, cowboys, comic characters, popular imagery, American Western motifs, lettering and logos repeatedly appeared throughout his work.In 1976 Higgins moved to New York City and settled on Ludlow Street in the Lower East Side, where he remained for approximately forty five years. His location placed him within an active community of artists, writers, performers and mail art correspondents. His apartment became simultaneously his home, studio, archive and informal production center for Doo Da Post. Paintings, stamp sheets, incoming mail, envelopes, handwritten notes, printed matter and decades of documentation accumulated in the space. In 1976 work by Higgins was included in Artists Stamps and Stamp Images, organized by James Felter at Simon Fraser University in Canada. The exhibition is an important event in the early institutional recognition of artist stamps and places Higgins within a formative international history of the medium.Higgins relationship with Brazil is particularly significant for understanding the international circulation of his work. In 1977 he participated in Poéticas Visuais, held from September 29 to October 30 at the Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade de São Paulo in Ibirapuera Park, São Paulo, and curated by Julio Plaza and Walter Zanini. The exhibition brought together international practices involving visual poetry, communication, printed matter, conceptual strategies and experimental media. Research on Latin American mail art networks documents E. F. Higgins III among its participants. In July 1978 E. F. Higgins III was also represented in Ephemera, the monthly journal edited in Amsterdam by Ulises Carrión, Aart van Barneveld and Salvador Flores through Other Books and So. This places Higgins within one of the period most important independent platforms for mail art, ephemeral works, artists publications and artists books. In 1979 he again appeared in a major Brazilian experimental art context through Multimedia Internacional, organized by Walter Zanini at the Escola de Comunicações e Artes of the Universidade de São Paulo and held from November 19 to December 16. Research on Latin American postal networks identifies Higgins as a participant. Multimedia Internacional addressed independent communication circuits, electronic and reproductive media, conceptual practices and interdisciplinary experimentation. In 1979 Higgins published a text on artists stamps in Print Collectors Newsletter. In August of the same year he organized Nudes on Stamps as Commonpress number 18, an artist stamp publication involving a large international group of contributors. In 1984 his essay On Mail Art: Doo Da Postage Works appeared in Flue, associated with Franklin Furnace. These publications demonstrate that Higgins was not only producing artistamps but also contributing to the theoretical and documentary discussion surrounding the medium. His participation in the XVI São Paulo Biennial in 1981 provides another major connection to Brazil. Higgins was included in the Mail Art Network section of the Biennial. The catalogue published by Fundação Bienal de São Paulo documents him alongside hundreds of international participants including Falves Silva, Paulo Bruscky, Clemente Padín, Edgardo Antonio Vigo, Anna Banana, Robin Crozier, Vittore Baroni and Jorge Caraballo. His documented participation in Poéticas Visuais in 1977, Multimedia Internacional in 1979 and the XVI São Paulo Biennial in 1981 demonstrates a sustained circulation of his work within Brazilian experimental art networks. This context is particularly important for understanding correspondence sent by Higgins to Brazilian artist Falves Silva. A First Day of Issue mail art card dated August 19, 1978, preserved in the Falves Silva archive, demonstrates that their connection existed through direct postal exchange as well as within the larger institutional network. The card links Higgins Doo Da Post practice in New York with the experimental art and mail art activity maintained by Falves Silva in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte.During the 1980s Higgins became increasingly active in the independent cultural environment of the Lower East Side. He participated in performance, graffiti, alternative venues and the community that became known as the Rivington School. The Rivington School emerged from activities associated with Ray Kelly and the No Se No Social Club. Higgins was among its early participants together with Ray Kelly, Toyo Tsuchiya, Linus Coraggio, Tovey Halleck, Jack Vengrow and Kevin Wendall. The artists occupied vacant urban spaces and created large welded structures from scrap metal while also organizing performances and other self directed activities.Higgins brought to the Rivington School skills in welding, painting, printing and graphic intervention that he had developed over many years. This context expanded his practice beyond the postal system into an urban field involving performance, scrap sculpture, graffiti, music, artist run spaces and resistance to conventional commercial art structures. In 1982 Higgins organized the 3rd International Doo Da Stamp Mail Art Show in New York, an exhibition specifically devoted to artist stamps. Documentation relating to the event survives both in mail art archives and within the institutional E. F. Higgins III Collection at the University of Iowa. His Doo Da Post practice continued for decades. Van Der Plas Gallery documents approximately 780 editions of Doo Da stamps, indicating an exceptionally sustained production within the artistamp field. From the late 1980s through the 1990s Higgins also developed the Fire Cracker Label Series, paintings characterized by intense color, graphic lettering, label imagery and references to American Western popular culture. The series demonstrates the continuous relationship between his painting and the visual language of his artist stamps. In 1992 a profile of E. F. Higgins III and Doo Da Postage Works appeared in Anna Banana Artistamp News. At that time Higgins reported having produced approximately 250 different editions of Doo Da stamps. The later growth of the project to several hundred editions provides a measurable record of its extraordinary continuity. In 1995 Higgins participated in Ruud Janssen Mail Interview Project. His answers documented the beginnings of his mail art activity in 1975 and 1976, the origins of Doo Da, his university work, international correspondence and the increasing costs of postal exchange. The interview remains an important primary source for understanding how Higgins himself described his role within the international network. The University of Iowa Libraries preserves the E. F. Higgins III Collection, identifier MsC0855, as part of the Alternative Traditions in the Contemporary Arts Collection. The archive measures approximately 3.5 linear feet and contains mail art, stamp art, paintings, clothing, documentary videos, publications, posters and correspondence. Its holdings include signed stamp sheets, Doo Da invitations, paintings, videotaped interviews, exhibition material and postal documentation. This institutional archive provides an essential basis for scholarly research on Higgins and on the history of mail art and artistamps. The Rare Books and Special Collections department of the University of Notre Dame also preserves correspondence by Higgins within the Vagrich and Irene Bakhchanyan Collections, demonstrating how his production is distributed through archives that developed directly from international postal exchanges.Following his death in December 2021, his work became the subject of renewed exhibitions and publications. In 2022 Van Der Plas Gallery in New York presented the posthumous solo exhibition Doo Da Forever, held from May 12 to June 5 and featuring paintings and works associated with his career. Franklin Furnace documented the exhibition and identifies Higgins among its alumni. In 2023 Van Der Plas Gallery presented a joint showroom exhibition of Istvan Kantor, also known as Monty Cantsin, and E. F. Higgins III from September 17 to October 1. The presentation emphasized connections between the Rivington School, Doo Da Post and the Fire Cracker paintings. The same year Autonomedia in New York published Roll over Picasso: E.F. Higgins III, His Life, Art, Legend by Istvan Kantor. The volume combines biography, interviews, recollections and narrative material related to Higgins, the mail art network and the Lower East Side artistic environment. In 2025 Higgins work was included in Rivington Renaissance at Van Der Plas Gallery together with Kevin Wendall, Konstantin Bokov and Christine Randolph. The exhibition revisited the historical legacy of the Rivington School and its contribution to experimental culture in the Lower East Side. His work was also included in Joyful Apocalypse at the same gallery. The historical significance of E. F. Higgins III lies particularly in his transformation of everyday postal mechanisms into an independent artistic language. In his work the stamp becomes more than evidence of postal payment. It functions as miniature painting, portrait, graphic multiple, sign of an invented nationality, collectible object and device for artistic communication. Doo Da Post transformed the administrative vocabulary of an imaginary state into components of an extended artwork that existed simultaneously as painting, printmaking, correspondence, archive and analog social network.Higgins was not a historical member of the Brazilian Process Poem Movement. No evidence located in the consulted sources indicates that he participated directly in the movement founded in Brazil in 1967. His relationship to that field should instead be understood through the international networks connecting mail art, visual poetry, experimental poetry, conceptual art, artists publications and artists associated with the Process Poem environment. His participation in Poéticas Visuais, Multimedia Internacional and the XVI São Paulo Biennial, together with his direct correspondence with Falves Silva, provides a concrete documentary connection between Higgins and Brazilian experimental art.
