Paul Carter - Reino Unido LIgado a M.A.I.C e VEC-UK

Também em 1978 uma obra coletiva intitulada Now You Can Change When Fashions Do é registrada pela University of Iowa. O assemblage reúne Tony Bradley, Paul Carter, Buster Cleveland, Robin Crozier, David Drummond e Andrew Nevai. Entre os projetos mais característicos de Carter encontra se I justify my work by...in 12 words or less. Entre os textos documentados em carimbos utilizados por Paul Carter encontram se Suspect Mailing, Unsolicited Mail, What do you think you are looking at?, So you think you know what this means? e You think you know everything.

English

Paul Carter is an English artist associated with mail art, postal art, conceptual art, experimental publishing, independent graphic production and sound experimentation, with particularly well documented activity between 1974 and 1985. A central part of his activity was developed from Eastleigh, England, and historical sources associate him with the designations M.A.I.C., Mail Art Intelligence Centre, and VEC UK. Carter participated in the international postal art network that during the 1970s and 1980s connected artists from different countries through direct correspondence and the circulation of postcards, envelopes, photographs, photocopies, rubber stamps, forms, publications, conceptual proposals, collaborative works and later sound recordings. His date and place of birth, academic education, teachers and educational institutions have not been located in the sources consulted.Historical documentation identifies Paul Carter as an active mail artist approximately between 1974 and 1985. During this period he regularly participated in mail art publications, collaborative projects, circulating works, add and pass on propositions and international exhibitions. The postal system was not simply a means of transporting his work. Addresses, deliberate addressing errors, returned mail, postal stamps, administrative markings, forms, photocopies and alterations created during circulation became elements of the artistic process itself. This approach places Carter within a conceptual strand of mail art in which circulation, communication, participation and documentary transformation occupy a central position. The artwork does not necessarily exist as a unique object but as a distributed process involving sender, recipient, postal services and different participants within the international network. One of the earliest documented projects by Paul Carter is Trans Global Painting from 1976. A proposal connected with the project is recorded by the University of Iowa in the Crane Friedman Correspondence Art Collection. The project is associated with Carter, Ken Friedman and Klaus Groh and provides evidence of the early integration of the English artist into international correspondence art networks. In 1977 Paul Carter appears among the participants in Poéticas Visuais, organized by Julio Plaza and Walter Zanini at the Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade de São Paulo, MAC USP, from 29 September to 30 October 1977. The participation of Carter in this exhibition is particularly important for understanding his relationship with Brazilian experimental art. Poéticas Visuais brought together approximately two hundred artists from different countries and explored practices related to communication, reproduction, xerography, visual poetry, publications and the circulation of artworks. Visitors could obtain Xerox copies of many of the documents on display, extending the logic of reproduction and circulation characteristic of the exhibition.Participation in Poéticas Visuais places Paul Carter directly within a Brazilian institutional environment that brought together artists and practices associated with visual poetry, conceptual art, experimental publishing and mail art. Although no evidence has been located establishing Carter as a formal participant in the Brazilian Process Poem Movement, his presence in this exhibition demonstrates a concrete connection with the Brazilian circuit in which intermedia experimentation and international postal networks were active. In 1978 Carter appears again in institutional documentation in the United States. The First International Mail Art Show at Gallery 300 in Staten Island, New York, included Paul Carter among participants from numerous countries. The catalogue records him alongside artists including Ken Friedman, Bill Gaglione, Graciela Gutiérrez Marx, Edgardo Antonio Vigo, Paulo Bruscky, Robert Rehfeldt, Ruth Wolf Rehfeldt, Klaus Groh, Robin Crozier, Rod Summers, Endre Tót and Pawel Petasz. Also in 1978 a collaborative work titled Now You Can Change When Fashions Do is recorded by the University of Iowa. The assemblage is attributed collectively to Tony Bradley, Paul Carter, Buster Cleveland, Robin Crozier, David Drummond and Andrew Nevai. The record reinforces the collaborative nature of the work of Carter and his proximity to other important participants in the international mail art network.Among the characteristic projects of Carter is I justify my work by...in 12 words or less. The project consisted of sending a form to artists within the network and requesting that each participant justify their artistic practice using a strictly limited number of words. The form, question, answer and postal circulation all functioned as components of the work. The project demonstrates the interest of Carter in artistic self definition, administrative structures and the transformation of ordinary communication procedures into conceptual devices.Another important project was Atrocity Photographs. Carter collected photographs from different participants in the international network and compiled the material into a photocopied publication. The project places his production within the fields of artists publications, Xerox art, independent editing and alternative distribution networks that played a central role in mail art during the 1970s.Incorrectly Addressed Envelopes explored the actual functioning and imperfections of postal services. Carter sent correspondence to artists using deliberately incorrect addresses. Some items reached their intended recipients while others returned to the sender carrying additional postal stamps, handwritten notations, administrative marks and other interventions. Postal circulation therefore became an active component in the formal production of the work.Carter also produced I Do Art, a publication or graphic project related to the visual aesthetics of British independent publications and punk zines of the late 1970s. This connection demonstrates the convergence between mail art, punk culture, independent production, photocopying, graphic montage, collage and alternative systems of distribution.Rubber stamps formed another recurring element of his visual language. Documented texts used by Paul Carter include Suspect Mailing, Unsolicited Mail, What do you think you are looking at?, So you think you know what this means? and You think you know everything. These stamps functioned simultaneously as visual interventions, conceptual comments and recognizable identity markers within the postal network.Around 1979 the use of imagery associated with Suspect Mailing produced an incident in which art, postal communication and systems of surveillance came directly into contact. Documentation preserved by the Lomholt Mail Art Archive records that Carter was investigated by authorities and questioned concerning photographs of assemblages containing visual elements such as batteries, wires, electrical components and cotton wool. The incident occurred within a British context in which material produced by other network participants, including Genesis P Orridge and Pauline Smith, also attracted official attention. In 1979 Carter participated in the International Umbrella Mail Art Exhibition, documented through The Umbrella Show catalogue associated with Judith Hoffberg. The extensive international participant list includes Paul Carter together with Anna Banana, Vittore Baroni, John M. Bennett, Paulo Bruscky, Ulises Carrión, Guglielmo Achille Cavellini, Robin Crozier, Klaus Groh, Ray Johnson, Pawel Petasz, Endre Tót and many other network artists.During the same year Paul Carter appears in The Postman Always Ring Twice, a catalogue produced by Lon Spiegelman in Los Angeles. The document records a large international mail art community and includes Carter among hundreds of participants, demonstrating the international scale of postal art and his effective position within that network. In December 1979 the name of Paul Carter also appears among participants in a Mail Art Show associated with L immagine mitica at Studio Arti Visivi in Matera, Italy. Documentation places Carter in an extensive international group that includes Gino Gini, Anna Banana, Vittore Baroni, Paulo Bruscky, Robin Crozier, Falves Silva, Klaus Groh, Pawel Petasz, Rod Summers and William Xerra. This record is especially relevant to the Salsa database because Paul Carter and Falves Silva are documented within the same international mail art exhibition.Carter also developed an important relationship with sound experimentation and cassette culture. His association with Rod Summers and VEC brought his postal activity into contact with sound poetry, experimental recording, tape music and international audio exchange. On 28 November 1978 Paul Carter participated in HERE, a VEC Audio Exchange programme. Documentation records a contribution produced with Leonhard Frank Duch identified as Medley Kunst Ist Ritmus. The programme also includes Rod Summers, John M. Bennett, Anna Banana and Bill Gaglione. On 10 April 1979 Carter participated in LISTEN, another VEC Audio Exchange programme, with the contribution Mod Mov. Other participants included Klaus Groh, Rod Summers, Tony Bradley, Carl Loeffler, Bill Gaglione, Betty Danon, John M. Bennett and Pawel Petasz. On 28 June 1979 Carter appears in CLEAR, a C90 cassette of the VEC Audio Exchange, together with artists including Robin Crozier, Vittore Baroni, Paulo Bruscky, Pawel Petasz, Leonhard Frank Duch, John M. Bennett and Rod Summers. On 29 December 1979 Carter participated in EAR2EAR, a C60 VEC Audio Exchange programme, contributing an untitled work. The documentation again demonstrates a shared circuit between Carter and international artists working with mail art, experimental poetry and sound.During the early 1980s this movement toward audio became increasingly important. Carter participated in the experimental group idid idid, associated with the Southampton environment and practices involving noise, tape music and independent cassette culture. The group appears in documentation for GATHERED HEAR, a VEC Audio Exchange programme dated 2 April 1980. Carter also produced a one off cassette using the name Brian Aspro. In October 1980 his name appears among participants in Commonpress 0016, an edition organized by Mario Lara in San Diego, United States, under the theme Things to Think About in Space. The extensive publication connects Carter with artists including Avelino de Araújo, Vittore Baroni, Paulo Bruscky, Ulises Carrión, Buster Cleveland, Robin Crozier, Klaus Groh, Ray Johnson, Pawel Petasz, Falves Silva, Rod Summers, Edgardo Antonio Vigo and Horacio Zabala. This participation again reinforces the connection of Carter with Latin American and Brazilian artists circulating within international correspondence networks. Also in 1980 the catalogue MAIL ETC ART, A Traveling Correspondence Art Exhibition, published by the University of Colorado in Boulder, records work by Paul Carter in a travelling exhibition that circulated through different locations in the United States. The catalogue presents his production within a broader survey of international correspondence art.The position of Carter within the network was also remembered by other participants. Vittore Baroni later recorded that, when beginning his historical investigations into mail art, he personally sought out several artists whose work interested him, including Paul Carter and Rod Summers. This testimony demonstrates the recognizable position occupied by Carter within the international postal art community.Available sources indicate that after his most intensive mail art period Carter continued working as a freelance illustrator and web designer and developed musical activities using the names Paul Beatless and The Beatless. These later activities maintain connections with independent culture, sound production and experimentation that had emerged during his participation in postal networks. The historical significance of Paul Carter within British mail art derives from the way his practice connects correspondence, independent publishing, photocopying, forms, rubber stamps, collaboration, postal intervention, graphic experimentation and sound production. His identification with M.A.I.C., Mail Art Intelligence Centre, VEC UK and Eastleigh appears repeatedly in historical documentation. No evidence has been located establishing Paul Carter as a formal participant in the Brazilian Process Poem Movement. However, his participation in Poéticas Visuais at MAC USP in 1977 and his circulation in projects and exhibitions together with Falves Silva, Paulo Bruscky and other Brazilian artists establish concrete documentary relationships between his practice and the international environment in which Brazilian visual poetry, mail art and experimental practices developed.
