AVA Gallery - New Hampshire - EUA
Expressões como All work shown, No returns, Documentation e Theme Postage Stamps sintetizam o modelo de participação.

AVA Gallery and Art Center is a nonprofit cultural institution devoted to the visual arts, arts education, exhibitions and support for the creative community of the Upper Valley region between New Hampshire and Vermont in the United States. The institution originated in 1973, when the organization then known as Community Gallery presented its first exhibition in a barn belonging to Dr. and Mrs. Robert Nye in Norwich, Vermont. In 1974, Emmabelle Egbert and Elizabeth Lili Mayor established a permanent gallery space in Hanover, New Hampshire. The organization obtained nonprofit status in 1976 and adopted the name AVA, meaning Alliance for the Visual Arts, in 1978.During the following decades, AVA expanded its exhibition and educational activities. Its arts education program was enlarged in 1988 to serve artists and audiences of different ages. In 1990, the institution moved to the former H. W. Carter and Sons factory building at Eleven Bank Street, Lebanon, New Hampshire 03766. The new location provided hardwood floors, high ceilings, exhibition rooms, teaching facilities and studios occupied by artists. It was within this institutional and architectural context that AVA Gallery and Art Center presented Artists Stamps International Mail Art Exhibition in 1994.Artists Stamps International Mail Art Exhibition was an international group exhibition of mail art held at AVA Gallery and Art Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, United States, from April 22 to May 21, 1994. The exhibition focused on artists stamps, also internationally known as artistamps. This form of artistic production appropriates the visual, graphic and symbolic structure of the postage stamp as a support for creative work, independent circulation, institutional criticism, fictional identities and communication among members of international Mail Art networks. The project was coordinated by Crackerjack Kid, the mail art identity used by the American artist Chuck Welch. The invitation established March 1, 1994, as the deadline for receiving contributions. Entries were to be mailed to Crackerjack Kid in care of AVA Gallery at Eleven Bank Street, Lebanon, New Hampshire 03766. The regulations stated that all received works would be exhibited, that no works would be returned and that documentation would be distributed to participants. Recipients were also asked to copy and circulate the announcement among their network friends, a procedure characteristic of the decentralized expansion of international Mail Art projects.Preserved documentation indicates that the exhibition brought together an international community of artists connected with Mail Art, artists stamps, visual poetry, conceptual art, alternative publications and networked communication practices. An issue of Netshaker, edited by Crackerjack Kid in Hanover, New Hampshire, published a participant list, reproductions of works and a text about the exhibition. Artists documented in the publication include Edgardo Antonio Vigo, Ashley Parker Owens, Rosz Craig, Anna Banana, James Warren Felter, Michel Hosszu, Vanci Stirnemann, Klaus Rupp, Julio Paz, Anna Boschi, Partho Guha, Serge Segay, Pere Sousa, Rea Nikonova, Crackerjack Kid, Howard McCalebb, Ray Johnson, Clemente Padín, Adriano Bonari and Marilyn Rosenberg. The publication also identified Chuck Welch as the curator and reproduced a participant stamp sheet created by Crackerjack Kid.The documentary copy associated with Brazil was sent by AVA Gallery and Art Center to Falves Silva, who was also identified in the postal address as Silva Post. The recipient was located at Rua Engenheiro José Rocha, number 3401, Candelária, Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, postal code 59000. The Air Mail delivery confirms that Falves Silva belonged to the contact and circulation field of the international call. However, the invitation alone confirms receipt of the announcement and does not establish that Falves Silva submitted a work or participated in the exhibition. His participation should only be described as confirmed after locating his name in the complete participant list, institutional records from AVA or additional correspondence. The invitation uses a yellow and black graphic composition incorporating irregular typographic characters, postage stamp imagery, postal cancellations, envelopes and fragments connected with Mail Art culture. Statements including All work shown, No returns, Documentation and Theme Postage Stamps summarize the participation model. The document functions simultaneously as an open call, a graphic work, an international correspondence item and material evidence of an artistic network based on postal circulation. The exhibition connects AVA Gallery and Art Center with a period of institutional expansion and documentation of Mail Art during the 1990s. Presenting the project in a gallery and art center allowed works conceived for postal circulation to enter a public exhibition environment. Artists Stamps combined postal communication, graphic production, artists stamps, international collaboration and shared documentation, all central principles of alternative art networks in the late twentieth century. The connection with Falves Silva links the exhibition to the Brazilian histories of the Process Poem Movement, visual poetry and Mail Art. Falves Silva developed work based on graphic experimentation, visual poems, alternative communication and the postal circulation of artworks and publications. The invitation sent to Silva Post documents a connection between AVA Gallery, the international Mail Art network coordinated by Crackerjack Kid and the experimental Brazilian circuit centered in Natal.AVA later consolidated its permanent presence in Lebanon. The institution purchased the Eleven Bank Street building in 2003, completed its renovation in 2007 and named it the Carter Kelsey Building. It currently maintains exhibition galleries, artist studios, teaching facilities, workshops and community programs serving artists and diverse audiences. Its institutional history demonstrates continued activity in exhibitions, arts education and the formation of creative communities.
