Entre 1956 e 1957 recebeu formação artística junto ao importante artista concreto Oskar Holweck, frequentou a classe de escultura de Theo Siegle, estudou na Meisterschule Saarbrücken e posteriormente realizou estudos em artes plásticas, pedagogia artística e design. Entre 1958 e 1960 estudou pintura com Boris Kleint na Werkkunstschule Saarbrücken, uma das instituições fundamentais para o desenvolvimento da arte moderna no Saarland. Entre 1961 e 1963 aprofundou seus estudos em academias e escolas superiores de arte na Alemanha, incluindo o Wehlte Institut e a Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart.Em 1965 iniciou sua carreira docente como professor de arte e educação visual na Hauptschule Oberthal. Em 1976 participou da fundação da Galerie im Zwinger, em Sankt Wendel, espaço independente voltado à arte contemporânea e experimental.A partir do final da década de 1970, Aloys Ohlmann integrou ativamente a rede internacional de Mail Art, estabelecendo correspondência e intercâmbio artístico com centenas de artistas da Europa, Américas e Europa Oriental. Sua produção postal relaciona se diretamente aos circuitos internacionais articulados por Robert Rehfeldt, Ruth Wolf Rehfeldt, Klaus Groh, Endre Tót, György Galántai, Anna Banana, Guy Bleus, Vittore Baroni, Ryosuke Cohen e numerosos participantes da Eternal Network.Em 1987 organizou o projeto internacional Bilder für Afrika, convocando artistas da rede de Mail Art para a doação de obras destinadas a ações humanitárias em benefício da África. Cerca de 250 artistas de 29 países participaram da iniciativa, que arrecadou aproximadamente 100 mil marcos alemães. Em 1989, por iniciativa de Ohlmann, as obras foram apresentadas na Kreuzkirche de Dresden e na Thomaskirche de Leipzig, constituindo um dos mais importantes projetos solidários realizados no contexto da Mail Art europeia.Em 2000 foi responsável pela exposição histórica Mail Art Saarland DDR Schmuggelgut oder Kassiber, organizada pela Saarländische Universitäts und Landesbibliothek, dedicada às relações entre artistas da Alemanha Ocidental e da República Democrática Alemã. He was a painter, printmaker, visual poet, mail artist, educator, editor and one of the most significant figures of postwar German experimental art. His artistic production developed at the intersection of painting, printmaking, artists books, Mail Art, visual poetry, conceptual art and interdisciplinary practices, establishing important international connections between Germany, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the global Eternal Network.After completing his early education, Ohlmann began an apprenticeship in painting in his father's company in 1953, graduating with distinction. Between 1956 and 1957 he studied with the important concrete artist Oskar Holweck, attended the sculpture class of Theo Siegle, studied at the Meisterschule Saarbrücken and later pursued studies in fine arts, art education and design. Between 1958 and 1960 he studied painting with Boris Kleint at the Werkkunstschule Saarbrücken, one of the key institutions in modern art education in Saarland. His postal practice was closely connected with networks associated with Robert Rehfeldt, Ruth Wolf Rehfeldt, Klaus Groh, Endre Tót, György Galántai, Anna Banana, Guy Bleus, Vittore Baroni, Ryosuke Cohen and many other participants in the Eternal Network.In 1987 he organized the international project Bilder für Afrika, inviting Mail Art network participants to donate artworks for humanitarian initiatives benefiting Africa. Approximately 250 artists from 29 countries participated, raising nearly 100,000 German marks. In 1989 the resulting works were exhibited at Kreuzkirche in Dresden and Thomaskirche in Leipzig, becoming one of the most significant solidarity projects in European Mail Art history.In 2000 he initiated the historical exhibition Mail Art Saarland DDR Schmuggelgut oder Kassiber at the Saarland University and State Library, focusing on artistic exchanges between West Germany and the German Democratic Republic.
