Signed Envelope, by Sebastião Nunes, dated 1973, is a paper envelope transformed through graphic and handwritten intervention. Its brown paper surface combines printed fragments, superimposed typographic characters, repeated letters, cut graphic elements and handwritten inscriptions, integrating the documentary function of the envelope with a visual composition constructed directly on its support.
In the upper left area, successive layers of letters and signs form a densely graphic field in which repetition and superimposition disrupt the conventional reading of the characters and transform typography into visual material. To the right, a large curved printed or collaged form occupies a significant portion of the composition. In the lower area, elongated repeated characters are arranged in sequence, with overlaps and cropping determined by the physical edges of the envelope.
The handwritten inscriptions preserved on the surface reinforce the documentary character of the object. Among the partially legible elements are references to Botafogo and Rio. Handwriting, typography, image and postal support are integrated into a composition in which Sebastião Nunes shifts the envelope away from its everyday function and uses it as a field for graphic and poetic experimentation.
A região superior apresenta rasgos e lacunas no suporte, enquanto as laterais e a parte inferior também mostram desgaste e áreas incompletas.
The object is a brown paper envelope with an irregular format and visible losses along several edges. The upper area shows tears and missing portions of the support, while the sides and lower section also display wear and incomplete areas.
The upper left section contains repeated and superimposed typographic characters arranged in different directions and densities. The central right area presents a large curved graphic form. The lower portion is occupied by a sequence of vertically arranged printed characters, partially overlapping and interrupted by the edges of the support.
Several handwritten inscriptions are present. Parts of the writing are difficult to read because of the handwriting, deterioration of the paper and interference from the graphic elements. References to Botafogo and Rio can be recognized, but the complete inscriptions, recipient and full address cannot be established with certainty.
Attribution to Sebastião Nunes, identification as a signed envelope and the date 1973 were supplied by the user. The specific printing process cannot be determined with certainty from the image alone. There is insufficient evidence to establish actual postal circulation or to classify the object as Mail Art.
