Este envelope está relacionado ao conjunto documental que inclui o convite para a apresentação What the Hell is Correspondence Mail Art Anyway- and Will It Give Meaning to My Life-, conduzida por Chuck Stake no Lecture Theatre do Alberta College of Art, em Calgary, em 26 de março de 1981.
SALSA TEXT IN ENGLISH
Mail Art envelope sent in 1981 by Chuck Stake Enterprizes, the project of Canadian artist Don Mabie, also known as Chuck Stake, from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, to Brazilian artist J. Medeiros in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The document belongs to the international network of Correspondence Art and Mail Art that connected Canadian and Brazilian artists during the early 1980s and provides material evidence of postal circulation between Calgary and Natal.
The upper left area identifies the sender through the address 4236 Worcester Dr SW, Calgary, Alta, Canada. The recipient is handwritten as J. Medeiros, Rua Artur Bernardes, 761, Alecrim, Natal, RN, 59.000, Brazil. An Air Mail Par avion label appears below the address, identifying the object as international airmail. The Calgary address corresponds to documentation associated with Chuck Stake Enterprizes correspondence preserved in the Poema Processo Archive.
The surface of the envelope was transformed into a field for visual intervention. On the left is a large blue rectangular sticker containing a white circular form surrounded by a serrated red border and the handwritten words Hot Town. Near the return address is a small sticker depicting a bee together with the words Be Thankful. On the right is a floral composition in an approximately triangular or heart shaped format, accompanied by vertical yellow and red adhesive strips. Handwriting, postal labels, postage stamps, stickers, popular imagery, colour and appropriated everyday materials are combined in a manner characteristic of postal art practices.
Several Canadian postage stamps are attached to the upper right corner and bear postal cancellations. Botanical, animal and human motifs can be distinguished among the stamps, forming a dense visual grouping of different Canadian postal issues. Within the context of Mail Art, these stamps do more than pay for international transportation. Postage stamps, cancellations, postal labels, addresses and marks produced during circulation become components of the final visual appearance and material history of the object.
Chuck Stake is the artistic identity adopted by Donald Edward Mabie, professionally known as Don Mabie. The Alberta Foundation for the Arts records that Mabie adopted the name Chuck Stake in 1972 when he became involved with Correspondence Art and Mail Art, shortly afterwards establishing Chuck Stake Enterprizes. His practice encompasses drawing, collage, performance, postal exchange and collaborative artistic activity. Mabie was born in Calgary in 1947, graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 1969, undertook postgraduate studies at the Instituto Allende in Mexico in 1970 and became an active participant in the experimental art community of Calgary.
Chuck Stake Enterprizes is documented as an artistic structure from at least 1973. The Something Else Press Archives at the Museum of Modern Art in New York preserve a piece of Mail Art by Chuck Stake Enterprizes and explicitly identify Chuck Stake as Don Mabie. This archival record confirms Mabies early participation in international correspondence art networks.
During 1981 Chuck Stake was deeply involved with Correspondence Art activities in Canada. The international Mail Art chronology maintained by Artpool records that later that year he organized Imagine, The Legacy of John Lennon at the Off Centre Centre in Calgary, from December 1981 into January 1982. Period documentation also records Chuck Stake Enterprizes in connection with international Mail Art calls and circulation.
This envelope is related to the documentary group that includes the invitation to What the Hell is Correspondence Mail Art Anyway- and Will It Give Meaning to My Life-, a presentation conducted by Chuck Stake at the Lecture Theatre of the Alberta College of Art in Calgary on March 26, 1981. The invitation announced images and words directed toward a working definition of Correspondence Art and Mail Art. The circulation of this material to J. Medeiros demonstrates materially the very phenomenon addressed by the presentation, an artistic network based on postal communication and the international movement of images, texts and documents.
The correspondence with J. Medeiros is particularly significant for the history of Brazilian postal art because it documents a direct connection between Calgary and Natal, two geographically distant locations incorporated into the same artistic network through correspondence. The handwritten recipient address and the individualized visual treatment of the envelope indicate that this was not simply informational material later collected by chance, but an object deliberately prepared for circulation between sender and recipient.
No evidence located in the consulted sources demonstrates that Chuck Stake or Don Mabie was a formal participant in the Brazilian Poema Processo movement. His relationship to the Poema Processo Archive derives instead from international Mail Art, visual poetry, alternative communication and graphic experimentation networks that established contacts with Brazilian artists. The preservation of this envelope addressed to J. Medeiros materially documents one of these international connections.
As an archival object, the envelope can therefore be understood simultaneously as artistic correspondence, Mail Art, postal document, ephemeral graphic work, record of international artistic exchange and provenance document. The Hot Town and Be Thankful stickers, Canadian postage stamps, postal labels, handwritten addresses, cancellations and physical traces accumulated during circulation form part of its historical materiality. The envelope documents not only the identities of sender and recipient but also the incorporation of the postal system itself into the artistic language of Chuck Stake Enterprizes.
