A obra utiliza como suporte um cartão postal comercial impresso no Brasil com a imagem de um foguete espacial em sua plataforma de lançamento, fotografado contra um céu intensamente colorido. Sobre essa imagem preexistente foi realizada uma intervenção por colagem, com aplicação de material semelhante a filme ou película diretamente sobre a região central do foguete, transformando um cartão de circulação turística e comercial em objeto artístico destinado à rede internacional de arte postal. No verso aparecem intervenções com carimbos em tinta vermelha associadas à circulação postal e à linguagem de Anna Banana, além do endereço manuscrito Manawatu Art Gallery, P.O. Box 565, Palmerston North, New Zealand. O cartão conserva ainda informações originais de fabricação, incluindo Printed in Brazil, reforçando sua trajetória material entre Brasil e Nova Zelândia. A destinação permite relacionar diretamente a peça à histórica exposição Art in the Mail, organizada pela Manawatu Art Gallery em Palmerston North. A mostra foi concebida pelo artista conceitual Nicholas Spill e organizada no contexto da direção de Luit Bieringa, utilizando o sistema postal internacional como meio para reunir trabalhos enviados por artistas de diferentes países. Art in the Mail foi apresentada como uma das maiores exposições internacionais realizadas até então na Nova Zelândia em quantidade de trabalhos, construída mediante convites enviados a artistas de diferentes partes do mundo e sem seleção convencional das obras, privilegiando o conceito de comunicação artística aberta por meio do sistema postal. Este cartão constitui assim um documento da expansão internacional da Mail Art nos anos 1970 e da transformação dos correios, cartões postais, carimbos, imagens apropriadas, colagens e correspondências em meios de produção, circulação e exposição artística. Anna Banana ocupa posição relevante nessa história, desenvolvendo desde os anos 1970 uma prática vinculada à arte postal, performance, publicação independente e às redes internacionais de correspondência. Em seu próprio relato sobre Mail Art, a artista descreveu a rede como uma forma de conexão entre pessoas criativas por meio da troca de trabalhos em papel e da participação em projetos e exposições através dos sistemas postais internacionais. A presença documental de Anna Banana em arquivos brasileiros também é significativa. O Arquivo Geral da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro registra um dossiê Anna Banana composto por quarenta folhas e com documentação entre 1975 e 1981, demonstrando sua inserção nas redes de intercâmbio artístico relacionadas ao Brasil durante o período. A obra preservada neste cartão deve portanto ser compreendida simultaneamente como intervenção artística, objeto postal, documento de exposição e testemunho material das conexões internacionais entre arte postal, arte conceitual, apropriação de imagens, colagem, carimbos de artista e comunicação em rede durante a década de 1970.

Anna Banana, intervened postcard, 1976, sent to the Manawatu Art Gallery in Palmerston North, New Zealand, for participation in the international exhibition Art in the Mail. The work uses a commercial postcard printed in Brazil showing a space rocket on its launch structure against an intensely colored sky. The preexisting photographic image was altered through collage, with a material resembling film or transparent photographic material attached directly to the central area of the rocket, transforming an ordinary commercial postcard into an artistic object intended for circulation through the international Mail Art network. The reverse contains red stamped interventions associated with postal circulation and the visual language of Anna Banana, together with the handwritten destination Manawatu Art Gallery, P.O. Box 565, Palmerston North, New Zealand. The original card also preserves the printed indication Printed in Brazil, adding another significant geographical element to its trajectory from Brazil toward New Zealand. Its destination directly connects the object with the historic Art in the Mail exhibition organized by the Manawatu Art Gallery in Palmerston North. The exhibition was conceived by conceptual artist Nicholas Spill and organized within the institutional context of the gallery under Luit Bieringa, using the international postal system as a means of assembling works submitted by artists from different countries. Art in the Mail opened at the Manawatu Art Gallery on 28 October 1976 and continued until 14 November 1976 before touring numerous New Zealand institutions through 1977, including the National Art Gallery in Wellington, Waikato Art Museum in Hamilton, Auckland City Art Gallery, Sarjeant Art Gallery in Wanganui, Wairarapa Arts Centre in Masterton, Bishop Suter Art Gallery in Nelson, CSA Gallery in Christchurch, Anderson Park Art Gallery in Invercargill, Hawkes Bay Art Gallery in Napier and Gisborne Museum and Art Centre. Art in the Mail was presented as one of the largest international exhibitions yet held in New Zealand in terms of the number of works involved. Invitations were distributed internationally and works were accepted without a conventional selection process, emphasizing open artistic communication through postal networks rather than traditional institutional hierarchies. The postcard therefore functions not only as an individual artwork but also as a document of the international expansion of Mail Art during the 1970s and of the transformation of postcards, stamps, rubber stamps, appropriated photographs, collage and correspondence into artistic media. Anna Banana occupies an important position within this history through her activities in Mail Art, performance, independent publishing and international correspondence networks. In her own writings she described Mail Art as a means of connecting creative individuals through exchanges of works on paper and through participation in projects and exhibitions using international postal systems. Her connections with Brazil are also documented institutionally. The General Archive of the City of Rio de Janeiro preserves an Anna Banana file containing forty items dated between 1975 and 1981, demonstrating her presence within artistic exchange networks connected with Brazil during this period. This postcard can therefore be understood simultaneously as an artistic intervention, a postal object, an exhibition document and material evidence of the international relationships connecting Mail Art, conceptual art, appropriation, collage, artist stamps and networked communication during the 1970s.
