O Lomholt Mail Art Archive registra como iniciativas principais Just Another Mail Art Show, de 1976, Third Armpit Show, de 1979, Seduction of the West by the Lure of the East, de 1983, e Workers Paradise, de 1986.O Third Armpit Show ocupa posição especialmente importante nessa trajetória. O convite apresenta duas etapas. Third Armpit Show I recebia contribuições no endereço 2324 N.W. A cronologia do artista registra Biennale Alternatives 79 Third Armpit Show no Sculpture Centre, Austrália, em 1979. Em 1983 realizou Seduction of the West by the Lure of the East.

Cornelius Kees Francke, primarily known as Kees Francke and also associated with the name Spudz within the Mail Art network, was born on 18 September 1952 in The Hague, the Netherlands, and died on 24 June 2002 in Aardenburg. He was a visual artist, poet, mail artist and organizer of international postal art projects. He moved to Rotterdam as a child, where he later completed his artistic education and developed a substantial part of his career. Dutch sources identify him as a first generation postal artist and record his education as a visual artist at the art academy in Rotterdam. The Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed identifies him as a sculptor, Mail Art artist and painter. His practice also included poetry, graphic works, painting, multimedia constructions and computer based art.Francke was active within the international Mail Art network from approximately 1973 to 1993. He participated not only by producing and exchanging artworks but also by organizing projects, maintaining international address networks and creating situations in which postal circulation itself became part of artistic production. The Lomholt Mail Art Archive identifies among his major projects Just Another Mail Art Show from 1976, Third Armpit Show from 1979, Seduction of the West by the Lure of the East from 1983 and Workers Paradise from 1986.Third Armpit Show occupies a particularly important position in Francke's activity. Developed in 1979, the project used the decentralized communication structure of Mail Art to collect contributions and move them between different geographical locations. Historical material preserved by the Lomholt Mail Art Archive explicitly documents Third Armpit Show I II as a Mail Art invitation from 1979.An original invitation postcard sent to Brazilian artist Falves Silva and preserved in his archive provides detailed evidence of the project. The invitation announces two stages. Third Armpit Show I requested contributions at 2324 N.W. Johnson, Apartment 2, Portland, Oregon 97210, United States, with a deadline of 1 March 1979. Third Armpit Show II directed contributions to 163 St. Johns Road, Forest Lodge 2037, New South Wales, Australia, with a deadline of 1 May 1979. The second call is independently documented in the periodical Umbrella, which confirms both the Australian address and the May deadline. The front of the postcard sent to Falves Silva presents an experimental graphic composition combining halftone photography, high contrast imagery, typographic overlays and words including Third Armpit, Show, again, Sandie and Nice New. The expression Sandie Shaw International Appropriations also appears. These elements place the object within the broader strategies of appropriation, collage, graphic reproduction and textual intervention characteristic of international Mail Art during the 1970s.The reverse identifies the postcard as an invitation and asks the recipient and friends to send contributions. Its deliberately informal and anti institutional tone is characteristic of many Mail Art calls of the period. The name Spudz also appears in relation to the project. Historical documentation preserved by the Lomholt Mail Art Archive explicitly identifies Cees Spudz Francke and describes his arrival in Sydney in 1979 with The Armpit Show. This account reveals one of the project's most distinctive features. The Armpit Show functioned as a group exhibition carried in Francke's personal suitcase. After arriving in Sydney, he transported the collected works to the Sculpture Centre, where they were exhibited. In this structure, postal exchange, physical transportation, travel and exhibition became interconnected components of the same artistic process. The State Library of New South Wales preserves institutional documentation for Biennale Alternatives 79 Third Armpit Show at the Sculpture Centre, dated from 18 to 27 May 1979. The archival entry identifies the surviving documentation as containing a list of artists. The same institutional archive records Biennale Alternatives 1979 European Dialogue at the Sculpture Centre from 12 April to 27 May 1979. These records confirm that Third Armpit Show developed from an international postal invitation into a documented group exhibition in Sydney. The project's connection with Brazil is independently demonstrated by Paulo Bruscky. His documented exhibition history includes Biennale Alternatives 79 Third Armpit Show at the Sculpture Centre in Australia in 1979. Bruscky had participated in international Mail Art since 1973. His presence demonstrates that Francke's project directly intersected with Brazilian experimental and postal art networks.Within this context, the invitation sent to Falves Silva acquires considerable documentary significance. Falves Silva, a Brazilian artist associated with Poema Processo and later deeply involved in international Mail Art, personally received the Third Armpit Show call. The surviving object preserves his address in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, a Dutch 50 cent postage stamp and a Luchtpost Par Avion label. It therefore demonstrates that Silva's postal address circulated within the international network used by Kees Francke and his collaborators.A distinction between invitation and confirmed exhibition participation is essential. The surviving postcard proves that Falves Silva was included among the recipients of the Third Armpit Show call and was invited to contribute. By itself, however, it does not prove that he submitted a work or that his work appeared in the exhibition at the Sculpture Centre. Such participation should only be catalogued as confirmed if Falves Silva is identified in the surviving participant list or another primary document. The relationship between Kees Francke and Falves Silva is therefore significant not because Francke belonged to the Brazilian Poema Processo movement, for which no evidence has been located, but because it documents an intersection between two historical networks. Falves Silva emerged from the Brazilian Poema Processo environment and subsequently expanded his practice through international postal art. Francke belonged to the first generation of Dutch Mail Art and developed transnational projects based on correspondence. Their 1979 connection demonstrates how these otherwise distinct experimental networks became interconnected. The geography contained in the invitation itself provides an unusually clear illustration of Mail Art as a global network. Rotterdam functioned as a point of dispatch, Portland as the destination for one phase, Forest Lodge and Sydney as Australian nodes, and Natal as Falves Silva's address in Brazil. A single postal object therefore materially connects the Netherlands, the United States, Australia and Brazil.Francke continued to develop international projects after Third Armpit Show. In 1983 he organized Seduction of the West by the Lure of the East. In 1986 he developed Workers Paradise, which became one of his best documented projects. Dutch biographical documentation records approximately 500 participants from 50 countries, while archival sources document its subsequent international exhibition history, including a presentation at the Centrale Bibliotheek in Rotterdam in 1987.Francke was also a poet. After his death, poems written between 1995 and 2000 were recovered for publication. In 2012 Ko de Jonge and Ever Arts produced a publication connected with Ballustrada. The Van Abbemuseum catalogues Ballustrada as an artist publication honoring Kees Francke and presenting stamps from his archive. In 2016 a further volume containing one hundred poems by Francke was announced.Kees Francke died on 24 June 2002. His legacy belongs to the history of European and international Mail Art and particularly to the development of projects in which postal communication operated simultaneously as artistic medium, exhibition system and structure for transnational community building.Within the Falves Silva archive and the broader study of the international ramifications of Poema Processo, the Third Armpit Show invitation is a particularly valuable document. It establishes a direct and dated relationship among Falves Silva, Kees Francke, Rotterdam, Third Armpit Show, Mail Art, Portland, Sydney and Biennale Alternatives 79. It also demonstrates that by 1979 Falves Silva was already present within a transcontinental communication network extending beyond Brazilian experimental poetry and connecting him with European, North American and Australian postal art organizers.
