He was one of the most important German art critics, cultural journalists, essayists, biographers and art historians of the postwar period. His work profoundly influenced the critical reception of modern and contemporary German art, particularly in the fields of Conceptual Art, Fluxus, Neo Expressionism, experimental art and international avant garde movements. He also published under the pseudonym N Wendevogel.Raised in a family of teachers with strong humanistic and Anglophile traditions, Ohff was drafted during the Second World War. In 1943 he became a prisoner of war in a camp near Casablanca in North Africa. During captivity he encountered Erika Mann, daughter of Thomas Mann, an experience he later considered decisive for his intellectual development and future journalistic career.After the war he began his journalistic career at the historic Neue Zeitung, published in the American occupation zone in Germany. He later worked for Heidelberger Tageblatt, Weser Kurier and Bremer Nachrichten. In 1961 he moved to Berlin and joined Der Tagesspiegel, where he became one of the leading voices of German cultural criticism.
